rebels Leta Lestrange had a "close relationship" with Newton Scamander while they were both students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, due to their mutual, outcast nature and love of studying magical creatures. One of Leta's experiments went wrong, endangering the life of another student. Rather than see his friend expelled, Newt took the blame and was expelled in her place. This left him bitter, but still much in love with Leta. Scamander kept a framed picture of her within his workshed during his travels to New York in late 1926. __________________

 What a tragic way to end Leta's character and I'm still hoping we get her in some capacity for the next 3 movies. A flashback can do that.  __________________

Yeah I don't think Newt is the type to be in the Quidditch team as he mostly keeps to himself and is most interested in creatures. It's not canon yet but he did say (in jest) that he'd much rather be a chaser (part 1) so maybe he's interested but hasn't really been on the team.

And also in the flashbacks for part 2, we didn't see him wear the Quidditch uniform. Unless explicitly stated by JKR or shown in the movies, then it's not confirmed that he's on the Hufflepuff Quidditch team.
