Reasons for Loving Neville:
He's adorably clumsy and forgetful.
His boggart is Professor Snape.
He knows right from wrong, and will stand up for what he believes in.
He knows a hell of a lot about plants.
He's proud to be Frank and Alice Longbottom's son.
He could have been "Neville Longbottom, the boy who lived" instead of Harry Potter.
He kicked ass in DH and showed Nagini who's boss!
He almost was "the chosen one".

Reasons for Loving Matthew Lewis:
Outside of his Neville costume he is a HUNK!
He plays Neville with truth and sincerity.
He has to wear a fat suit and fake teeth to be Neville but he still loves it!
He genuinely believes in Neville and everything he can do.
He's disaffected by fame and fortune.
He's got the cutest accent!

"Yes, I thought Gran would be angry about all the publicity," said Neville, "but she was really pleased. Says I’m starting to live up to my dad at long last. She bought me a new wand, look!"
He pulled it out and showed it to Harry.
"Cherry and unicorn hair," he said proudly. "We think it was one of the last Ollivander ever sold, he vanished next day – oi, come back here Trevor!"
And he dived under the seat to retrieve his toad as it made one of its frequent bids for freedom.

DH:
"Just in case they're - busy - and you get the chance - "
"Kill the snake?"
"Kill the snake," Harry repeated.
"All right, Harry. You're okay, are you?"
"I'm fine. Thanks, Neville."
But Neville seized his wrist as Harry made to move on.
"We're all going to keep fighting, Harry. You know that?"

"But you are a pure-blood, aren't you, my brave boy?" Voldemort asked Neville, who stood facing him, his empty hands curled into fists.
"So what if I am?" said Neville loudly.
"You show spirit, and bravery, and you come of noble stock. You will make a very valuable Death Eater. We need your kind, Neville Longbottom."
"I'll join you when hell freezes over," said Neville. "Dumbledore's Army!" he shouted, and there was an answering cheer from the crowd, whom Voldemort's silencing charms seemed unable to hold.

The Prophecy
In the fifth book, Neville and other members of Dumbledore's Army fight numerous Death Eaters at the Ministry of Magic. Their intent is to keep Voldemort from hearing a prophecy about the fate of a chosen one. Unknown to Neville, the prophecy they were fighting over arguably involved him.

Because the prophecy was 'released' during the battle none of the Army or Order got to hear the prophecy, but Albus Dumbledore later reveals to Harry it's contents, as he was the one the prophecy was originally made to. In it, a wizard who would have the power to defeat Lord Voldemort is described as the 'Chosen One.' It goes on to say that this wizard will be born 'as the seventh month dies' and describes characteristics that could point to either Harry or Neville.

Dumbledore himself believes that either boy could have been the wizard in the prophecy but the fact that Voldemort chose Harry (presumably because, like himself, Harry is a halfblood) meant that he became the 'Chosen One' and was also marked as Voldemort's equal. Had he chosen Neville, the fate of the wizarding world could have gone an entirely different way.

ETA: I just listened to the first part of the JK interview on pottercast (I know, I know! I'm behind! lol), but I just absolutely love what she said about Neville in that. I copied that part from the transcript, and even if you've listened to it, it was really good, and if you haven't heard it yet, then read this!

He was a scrawny little kid in glasses, and he comes through, and becomes the guy everyone wants to know.

I think it's the same with him too, he made himself cool, in DH he had all of this confidence and he just took charge!

I just love how JKR talks about Neville.

Neville, he came a long way, from this insecure, quiet boy to this incredible brave young man who stands by his friends till the end and who always had it in himself to become a hero of his own. Because heroes are never born, they are made and Neville is the perfect example of that.
