Their intent is to keep Voldemort from hearing a prophecy about the fate of a chosen one. Unknown to Neville, the prophecy they were fighting over arguably involved him. Because the prophecy was 'released' during the battle none of the Army or Order got to hear the prophecy, but Albus Dumbledore later reveals to Harry it's contents, as he was the one the prophecy was originally made to. In it, a wizard who would have the power to defeat Lord Voldemort is described as the 'Chosen One.' It goes on to say that this wizard will be born 'as the seventh month dies' and describes characteristics that could point to either Harry or Neville. Dumbledore himself believes that either boy could have been the wizard in the prophecy but the fact that Voldemort chose Harry (presumably because, like himself, Harry is a halfblood) meant that he became the 'Chosen One' and was also marked as Voldemort's equal.
