I can imagine the rest would have sleepless nights waiting for Remus to come back when he goes away as a werewolf.

Somebody has to look out for him. Maybe they take turns too. Some nights it's James, other nights it's Remus or Peter.

Also they learned to be Animagus in their 5th year and by that time they already know Remus was a werewolf so they found out about him being a werewolf earlier than than their 5th year. Also by the time the rest learned to be an Animagus, they'd transform along with Remus so he won't be alone at night. So yeah, I can't remember if the books mentioned anything before they all learned to be Animagus and how they handled Remus when he transformed.

They started reading about being an Animagus during their 2nd year and it took them 3 years to learn to be an Animagus as I imagine it's tough to learn it. Only the best wizards can do it (like McGonagall too).

They read up about it because of Remus. They wanted to be there for him when he turns into a werewolf so they can also look out for him. What great friends right?

Sadly Peter didn't think that way...
