That's true. Even though the Dursleys treated Harry like crap, at least he did have his own room (even if he's always locked away there) although the Dursleys are only obligated to take care of him because he's family.

Since being in a portrait means he's dead, I'm gonna guess it happens towards the end of HBP because Harry was barely at Hogwarts in DH.

I would've preferred to see Dumbledore live but I guess the essence of his death/sacrifice is to keep Harry safe and that for me is very heroic of him.

OMG this scene! I had goosebumps the whole time.
    But then, through the darkness, fire erupted: crimson and gold, a ring of fire that surrounded the rock so that the Inferi holding Harry so tightly stumbled and faltered; they did not dare pass through the flames to get to the water. … Dumbledore was on his feet again, pale as any of the surrounding Inferi, but taller than any too, the fire dancing in his eyes; his wand was raised like a torch and from its tip emanated the flames, like a vast lasso, encircling them all with warmth.
