But it was only a few months ago when pouring over one of these books with photographs of butterfly specimens on boards that I really, truly noticed the pins piercing their thoraxes and suddenly could not unsee the hidden violence of butterfly-hunting. I think I had been so distracted by their unique markings and tiny, perfect bodies that I hadn’t even thought about the cost of freezing their beauty in time. They lie gleaming on their pins, forever perfect, but dead. That just strikes me as too brutal a sacrifice. And it felt like the perfect metaphor for the message of this book, which is a call to choosing a creative, unpredictable journey over the safe, sure, dark pursuit of perfection which I’ve found always leads to a dead end.

The full title is The Opposite of Butterfly Hunting: The Tragedy and The Glory of Growing Up. It’s a memoir, but it is really somewhere between a memoir and a self-help book. 📖 It will be published in the Autumn 🍂(not September as I originally said - the ol’ deadline got the better of me a few times...🙈) and you can pre-order a copy at the link in my bio.

I cannot wait to share this with the world!! (Except that I can, there is a hefty edit ahead haha and still lots of work to do!) 📚

It looks faded already but when it was new it was really dark and can be easily seen.
