Well... if you go to IMDB.com, you can find business data for the movies. I don't think they have the total Gross of PS or CoS there, but maybe this helps:

total US Gross:

Philosopher's Stone: $317,557,891 (Nov. 14th 2001 - May 19th 2002)
Chamber of Secrets: $261,970,615 (Nov. 14th 2002 - April 13th 2003)
Prisoner of Azkaban: $211,710,000 (June 4th 2003 - June 28th 2004)

From the release of PoA until June 28th are about 3 weeks. So here are some more figures:

US Gross after (about) 3 weeks:

Philosopher's Stone: $239,659,542
Chamber of Secrets: $213,970,962
Prisoner of Azkaban: $211,710,000

So I think the predictions of the PoA Gross just falling short of the Gross of CoS might be right.

So from those figures it almost seems like less and less people are seeing the films at the movies. Although there seems to be more and more hype about the,m, and they get better and better.
