It was when Snape joined the Death Eaters. During their early days at Hogwarts, Lily was getting close to James already and they were already drifting apart too.

Can be nervous smiling too. I know that they both had early problems in their friendship once they started Hogwarts but in that drawing it looks like they're probably in their 4th year already.

I really hate that not even their friendship was saved. They just fell apart. I would've been fine if they were friends but even that was ruined.
