I also think maybe Newt asked helped from Theseus to take down Grindelwald? And part of Theseus' decision to help Newt will probably affect Leta so she decided to join Grindelwald instead? I'm just speculating here.

i dont think newt asked theseus i think they are together at the same time though when he attacks i think theseus as a big brother asked newt to join him and his fight but newt isnt a figther .

and yes leta wont be on their side

Because if Grindelwald gets to him first, he'd be in big trouble and Grindelewald might even use Jacob as bait to get to Newt.
