But with the memories of the muggles erased by the Thunderbird, I'm assuming no one will remember everything magical anymore. At least within that area of NYC.

It's a quick (but risky) fix for muggles to forget about magic. They can also choose who can remember. In this case, Queenie put a spell on Jacob so he'd remember them all eventually.

Newt is definitely awkward around girls. Jacob...he probably has a way with the ladies but also a bit on the awkward side.
