I'm sure nobody thought anyone will die. Sometimes I wonder what if the Order didn't arrive and the kids were left to deal with the Death Eaters? I think they'll be captured and Voldemort will be left to deal with Harry which can be problematic for Dumbledore, etc.

I doubt Voldemort will also kill Harry right away plus he was also looking for the Elder Wand so he'll probably use Harry as bait so Dumbledore will come to him.

Voldemort could've used Harry's friends to get to him too but good thing they were at Hogwarts most of the time so Harry is protected.

The Ginny thing was because Ginny had the diary. The same fate would've happened if someone else had the diary but since it was Ginny (and she was Ron's sister too), it meant more to save/rescue her.

Lucius slipped it in her cauldron at Flourish and Blotts when they went to Diagon Alley to buy School Supplies. Tom Riddle, after making his diary into a Horcrux, gave it to Lucius Malfoy . Remember in COS Lucius saw Ginny while they were having Lockhart sign their books?
