I think I may have tried reading a canon fic mixed with a UC ship before. I don't think I finished it.

Yeah some fics just lose their flare.

For example, a Ron/Hermione fic but a side couple would be Neville/Ginny instead of Harry/Ginny.

Okay, I understand. I'd definitely read Ron/Hermione with Ginny/Neville on the side.

It depends if the story went the way I wanted it to. I'm usually okay with UC but as long as my canon pairings are intact, that's the only time I can accept UC.

That's understandable. Because if the canon pairing isn't together and turns into an UC one, you have no idea where the writer will take it. Also, it increases the risk of them writing the characters out as OOC instead of the way J.K. Rowling wrote them.

Exactly. Everytime it deviates from canon, it gets a bit tricky and at the same time, it's a gauge on how fic writers can create an AU that still feels canon somehow. I hope I made sense.

It takes more effort to write an AU fic, because there'll always be people (including myself) who are quick to spot the plot-hole or discrepancies with canon, even if it is AU.

Sometimes I shrug it off, especially when I like the fic and the direction it's going. If I get very critical about a fic, I might not enjoy it at all.

I really like AU fics so any changes don't bother me...

That's good for you then. I'm easily annoyed with AU but I can easily shrug it away if the story is good.

I was reading a HHr fic where harry was written as a player then conveniently he was still a virgin once they got together finally. I don't like stuff like that. Apparently in the story he was lying to make her jealous but I had to quit reading

I can understand why you quit reading it. That's very OOC and very AU too.
