In the books, it was impossible. They never really saw each other romantically but they were friends which all started in OotP when Harry decided to form Dumbledore's Army.

Yes but of course things happened and he wasn't able to. It's a "what if" moment in the movie, I think. They're good friends in canon but I seriously think it could've gone that way if it was up to us.
