Yes towards the last 2 books we learned about dark magic and Horcruxes. It was important to know the reasons why Voldemort wanted immortality and why he did what he did.

And technically Voldemort only came to life in GOF and it'll take 3 books later for him to finally reveal all his Horcruxes.
