Yeah, Sirius would've been a good father. He spent most of his later life in Azkaban all because of Peter. He was deprived of living out a life because of his time there.

Although I do accept his death. If Sirius had lived, I think he will still die anyway trying to protect Harry. OotP was the perfect time for him to go, imo.
