The movie version was pretty cool too. It actually happened the same way as in the book but the moment in the movie was more emotional because of the background music and then Dobby and Dan's acting.

Here's what I found, some of them fought at the Battle of Hogwarts.

Seems to me that elves are not fighters but they joined the Battle because of their loyalty to their masters who have fought that time.
