The Discussion Thread: He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named and the HPB?

So, let's start off with a welcome message: Welcome!

Although the discussion thread is open to all, we do have a member list. If you wish to be added, just post as such (preferably in a message that is longer than one line and includes more than "this books rawk").

The People Who Can Still Use Their Brains:
-*ADARA*
-Airie75
-Anna-Liisa
-baileycat
-Cheermione Silverstain
-Cold-Blooded Piece of Toast
-k46
-lost lullaby
-spikearrin
- Vacancies available

Topics that should be discussed here:
-What are books, what are they about, who's "hawt" & who's "nawt"?
(Joking, by the way)
-Which book is your favourite and why?
-Which character is your favourite and why?
-Which scene in the books is your favourite and was it decently paralelled in the movies?
-If J.K. Rowling was a vegetable or a fruit, what would she be and why?
-Is anybody interested in bringing back the Quidditch game that used to be held here that was a scavenger hunt type activity that required the players to scour through the books for information if they didn't know it? It was quite fun. The HP-Lexicon would be very much out of bounds.
-Plot discussions, chapter musings, various other things since this thread is for discussion.

If you get bored trying to use your brain, close your eyes and click something here and chances are you won't have to strain yourself or try to have a vocabulary suitable for your age.

If you do indeed use your brain, feel free to poke about the ancient roots of this thread:
The Key to Chapter Analysis - discussing those little unanswered questions that pop into your little head while reading. Deserted since: 5-04-04
The Key to How Magic Works - Do yoga, become a wizard. Deserted since: 04-04-04
The Key to The Animagus - What is an animagus and who else could be an animagus that we've read of? deserted since: 02-13-04
The Key to JKR's Website - The ever-taunting J.K. Rowling has redone her site to better reflect her working conditions. Discussing the new information from the site about the books... goody! Deserted since: 11-06-04 until Gilmoracholic tried to revive it unsuccessfully on 01-11-05
The Key to The Marauder's Map - Discussing the ins and outs of the Marauder's map until deserted on 05-12-04. Plus side: Has links to the also deserted Wandless Magic, "Weak" line, and JKR's Book Day Chat discussion threads.
The Key to The Meaning of the Books - What does it all mean? Nobody knows but why not take a guess and chat it out? Deserted since 11-23-04
The Key to Wonderment - Discussing all the things you've wondered about Harry Potter since you picked up the books. Deserted since: 04-16-04
The Key to Reading the books - everybody reads differently and in different places... how do you read Harry Potter? Deserted since: 04-03-04
The Key to Minor Characters - Some may call them minor, while others call them the best. Who's your favourite minor character? Deserted since: 05-04-04
The Key to Favourite Quotes - was deleted due to inactivity... does that mean that nobody read the books or just that they didn't particularly like any of it... except that it put images of odd snogging couples in their heads?
The Key to Oopsies! - The editors and proofreaders skipped some stuff. Discussion of what you have noticed and that of others. Deserted since: 09-30-04
The Key to Disliked Characters - Which characters do people loath with a little less of the why aspect. Deserted since: 06-13-04
The Key to Unconventional Couples - It's where all those shipper threads belong... unless of course you're shipping Molly/Arthur, Lily/James, Penelope/Percy, Petunia/Vernon... in which case you belong in the non-existant Conventional Couple thread.
The Key to Being entirely off-topic - where people that mind the rules go to talk about stuff un-HP related. Generally, people just blither about it on any thread they please. {i.e. The Slytherin CAPITAL Room , The Ravenclaw Common Room (which has been the same thread for over a year and been deserted save for spamming), The Hufflepuff Common Room (same thread since '03), and the dreaded lion's den- The Gryffindor Common Room } Although chatting is acceptable in the CAPITAL room and the Coomon rooms, the mindless blither that occurs there and in a majority of the shipper threads is not. To the off topic thread- all of you!

Neither is often used in conjunction with other but if you're going to look at it from that angle I would say that the referenced "other" was the HPB.

That prophesy really didn't seem as important to me as it was made out to be. Was all the really worth it? He heard it from Dumbledore anyways. Didn't we all pretty much gather that the fate of the wizarding world rested on the shoulders of the Boy Who Lived? The prophesy pretty much cemented it for us but Dumbledore wouldn't allow Harry so much room with the rules if he didn't want him to do something. We know this is climaxing before Harry is 17, or at least while he's seventeen. Dumbledore has seen war and more death than anyone should, and he knows what he is asking of this boy who had no childhood and no parents... he is asking this already tortured soul to do what grown men cannot, and go face to face with Dark Lord Tom. There's no way Dumbledore would cushion and protect and pamper Harry so much if that wasn't his final goal. The boy had no childhood and has no future so why not let him do whatever while he's at Hogwarts?

I'm such a pessimist.
As posted by me in the last thread.

Meanwhile, I can change the new title if you want. I didn't know what to put...

Chrissy thanks for starting the new thread

hee I loved this question

Quote:

I think she would be a carrot since she seems to be fond of red heads see the Weasleys and she likes to hide a lot of her plot kind of like how a carrot stays underground

Anywoo can I please be added to the list?

As for your last post on the other thread I agree that Dumbledore knows Harry's future will be harsh and was just trying to protect him. But at the same time knowledge is power and I always feel like Dumbledore is keeping stuff back from Harry. I hope in the next book we see a more open and trusting relationship with them as Harry matures and comes closer to his destiny.

Kim, you've been added

I don't remember what my response for that was so whatever it was I'm changing it to pomegranite for reasons undefined.

As for Dumbledore holding stuff back from Harry: I do so wish he would stop doing that. It's done nothing but hurt Harry up until this point, in addition to hurting others. I am worried about Voldemort infiltrating Harry's mind and obtaining the information but Harry should be allowed to know everything if they expect the boy to come face to face with evil and win.

Happy Easter everybody!

Thanks for adding me!

I dread finding out what else Dumbledore has kept from Harry You think he would learn his lesson by now.

Do you guys think Dumbledore will make it to the end of the war alive? Or do you think he will die? I hope that he lives but I get the feeling that he might just be killed in book 7. Wouldn't it be ironic if it was because of something he kept from Harry.

Oh hello! I didn't realise we had a discussion thread.

As for Dumbeldore I get the feeling he won't make it til the end. Dumbledore is one of those guys Harry can (normally) rely on if something bad happenes. Take the ending of OOTP. What would have happened to Harry if Dumbledore hadn't come to his rescue? Eventually there should be a point where Dumbledore is unable to help him in his fight against Voldermort and that Harry must do it alone...after all the book is all about Harry Potter's journey.

I don't think the propecy isn' important, since JK said on her site that she "worded it very carefully", so I think there should be something more to it.

We made it to the second thread. Yey for us!

I don't have anything terrible interesting to convey at the moment. But I was wondering if you think that I'm unable to use my brain. I know it's been said before, but I didn't know you were serious .

i think that dumbledore will make it to the end when harry does live and then he'll die. his mission the last how many years was to protect harry and kill voldemort once and for all. i think when he does that, he'll live a little while longer but eventually die quietly.

We all love Ben's brain, but if said person whose brain we all love wants everybody to know that said person has a brain (by reading our first post) then said person must explicitly state it

roswellcharmed_2000- I'm going to marry your avatar, just to let you know

Welcome to Sushi! We hope you stay for a long time and discuss with us anything and everything that pops into our minds...

Anna-Liisa, visiting often is good. You know we love you!

Dumbledore thinks he's sheltering Harry and he really isn't doing anything but leaving him unprepared to defend himself. I can understand his reasoning but I do not exactly agree with it. Since Dumbledore is the Secret Keeper of the Order, nobody can know where it is unless he informs them, correct? What if Voldemort sees inside Harry's mind to figure it out? Is that possible? The Order would be so poo if Harry's mind can be Voldemort's toy chest.

What about Percy? Do you think he's a Death Eater or no... he was raised so that he wouldn't be like that but he's so distancing himself from his family and just look at who he worked under. He hardly seems the type to cozy up to Lucius Malfoy though.

As for the prophecy- I just don't think it was worth all that struggle. It may have been carefully worded but that doesn't make it any less than already basically understood. Everybody had it practically figured anyways, the prophecy was just like the fortune in a fortune cookie- a symbol that you ate it. The prophecy didn't really tell us anything new other than that it could have been neville but Voldemort chose Harry. Add in a bunch of Death Eaters and various other school children and you've got OotP. It was a very drawn out book just for that prophecy that Dumbledore easily could've revealed to Harry prior to that night. He had his reasons for not doing so, but yet again, I don't necessarily agree. I think that OotP was just the means of more senseless death and brooding. Yay for storyline continuation but really... who's Harry got now for a father figure besides Dumbledore. He probably won't die in book six but who knows what will happen by the end of seven. We'll be lucky to be left with a live harry, let alone anybody else.

I don't think Percy will be a death eater (and if he does I wont be that surprised). He's the black sheep of the family, but he's not that bad. I think Percy is going to just stay neutral.

*comes out of lurking*

Just wanted to say that I'm glad you guys got the thread #2! I was actually waiting til we got here before I jumped in. I missed a whole bunch of pages in the last one and I couldn't keep up. :/ Could I be added to the list please?

Anyway, while it seems that Percy would be the type to become a Death Eater (overly ambitious, power hungry..) I'm not sure if he would. I mean, he was definitely brought up to frown upon the likes of the Malfoys. But then again, he did turn around and accuse his family of keeping him back because of their ideals.. I dunno, Percy's a shifty character.

I was thinking about something lately: Why hasn't Harry done accidental magic at Hogwarts? I mean, as powerful as he is and as angry as people make him (Snape, Malfoy Jr., Slytherins, ect.), you'd think that he'd get so angery eventually that he would do something to someone, eventually. But it hasn't happened, why? Maybe that was explained before in a previous book and I forgot.

I'm not so sure anymore, about Percy Death Eater. If he becomes one, then...I need to start support the DE:s. Lol. Seriously, he could become one because he's different from his family, but then again Percy isn't so so so evil. At least not in the books. Okay so he didn't visit his father but...

But hey it's Percy. It's hard to know what he's thinking.
