Could you see Harry Potter as a television series?

As we saw if Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Karen Sisco, a series is taken from a movie so how would you feel about Harry Potter: the Series?

I am not sure myself. I like Emma, Rupert, and Daniel in their portrayals of Harry, Hermoine, and Ron and it would be hard to see anyone else playing those characters.

How do you come on this? Would you be for it or against it?

I'm obsessed with everything HP related, I'd be for it.

I woudln't like to have a series of HP. Mainly because obviously the characters would be played by different actors than in the movies, and I just don't want any other Harry appart from Daniel and the Harry of my mind (because when I read the books I imagine my own Harry and other characters, not the actors like other people do, like my sister).
But if they did a cartoon series, then I'd watch it. A pretty cartoon it shoudl be, not like Sabrina the teenage witch, you know, something better drawn.

I think it would be a little weird, and very hard to make successful. I say this because the books would be complete and the movies would already be finished or in production, so there would be no new canon information to present. That being said, I think JK Rowling would feel like the Harry Potter chapter in her life was closed, so she wouldn't really be on board with a TV series. Without the creator, it just wouldn't be the same.

I'd just hate to see some half-a** attempt that would kind of ruin the magic, you know? I kind of feel like the Buffy movie had plenty to build on (since it was only a less-than-2-hour movie it couldn't cover the kinds of history, magic, etc. that the show could), whereas Harry Potter will be a complete tale with the end of the books/movies.

I suppose that it could be a series set PAST book 7, which could be interesting. However, I don't think I'd want to see other actors in the parts (which is what would inevitably happen), nor would I want to see a show without JK Rowling's creative input (and since she has said she doesn't have plans to write about a future past book 7, I'm counting on this).

I think the world of Harry Potter would go down the drain. The series would have to take place after they get out of Hogwarts, so judging what is on TV now it would just be turned into a soap opera where Harry is even more angst ridden then he is now.

I think if the movies hadn't come out I think a TV series would work.... but not like Buffy the vampire slayer.

I'd rather it be a very long book adaptation like the BBC did with Pride and Prejudice (Colin Firth e.t.c). Because with the movies I feel like they're missing a lot of the charm that you get with secondary characters and the smaller subplots. A lot of that has to go with movies but if it was a mini series then YES.. that would be great. But not now since books 6 and 7 have not come out. I guess maybe this could be something that could happen in 25 years time or something with different actors and a whole new generation of new Harry Potter fans.

I think it could possibly work if the people needed agreed with it. I've actually been thinking about this a lot. It'd need more focus on characters than plot aims, but get a good dialogue writer, that'll happen. They could bring more personality to the characters along the way. It should wait until all the books are out and it's been some years. Since all the fans will already know the story, it wouldn't be about the story so much as how you show it. It should definitely be done by some obsessors; a labor of love, not just some market attempt by people wanting to cash in on the mania. And...since the books are of erratic lengths, maybe a series of miniseries would work better than a group of seven regular show seasons--that would leave people scrambling to edit or elongate--but I do like the idea. I'd do it myself if I could, really.

I don't think a TV series would work because the movies have already covered most of the important scenes from the books and any kind of series that takes place before/after Harry goes to Hogwarts just wouldn't feel right. It's supposed to be a boarding school story after all.

Although I would be all in favour of a new actor to play Harry...one that can actually act (i.e. not Daniel Radcliffe).

I wouldn't be in favor of this at all. It just wouldn't work, Harry Potter is epic, made for the big screen. Especially with the special effects and all, a tv series just wouldn't have that kind of budget.

And I would not like to see Harry played by anyone other than the fantastic Daniel Radcliffe, who is a wonderful actor and good role model. I'm a woman old enough to be his mother but I happen to admire that young man a great deal. With each and every movie he has matured and he makes that character come alive. Ditto for Emma Watson.

Oh, he's a nice kid judging from the stuff he says, but he really can't act. The crying scene in the third film was appalling.

I agree that he's not a wonderful actor, not even a good actor I'd say, but he's improving in each film. And I just can't see another boy playing Harry, no matter how good they act, Dan is Harry for me and no one else.

When I saw the title to this thread I immediatley thought "GAWD NO!!!" I think a tv series would be overdoing it, not to mention that it would give them even more opportunities to slaughter the books which makes even sadder coz if they did make a tv series I would still watch all of it just because it's HP, just like I did with the movies...

Really? Because I thought Harry Potter was written for the imagination to run wild.

Yes, the movies are good, but seriously, Harry Potter started out as a BOOK. It should end as a book. If they created anything else other than the movie, then it's pointless.

Actually, a lot of the HP crap is pointless. Yes, I have action figures and some random little do-dads, but I was pulled into the hype. The movies spurred that.

As much as I love the movies - and I do, don't get me wrong - there is nothing better than sitting down and reading and letting my imagination take me to Hogwarts, see My!Snape, picture My!Lupin, laugh at My!Ron. By making a movie (much less a series) it takes away from what I see. Yes, I have My!Lockhart, but when I read COS, I can't help picturing Kenneth Branagh in the scenes that he had in the movie. It's sad, really, because I can't hold on to my HP world.

A series? My gosh, what an underhanded way of saying "Let's make more money!"

I mean, even this board was brought about because of the movie, not the book. I remember when we were but a wee thread over on the Books board. We actually had discussions and insights, not just "OH EM GEE, Harry should SOOOOO hook up with HermioN!1oen" or "Rupert is TEH HOT!!Oene1".

Add a series onto this already too full plate, and I'll lose my appetite for HP altogether.
