A long, long time ago there lived a boy named Harry Potter. He had this devastatingly tragic life, all made better by a loyal and trusting rapport he had with his best friend Hermione Granger. Little did they know, the loving friendship they shared would turn into something more because of course, there are some things you can't share without liking each other, and knocking out a 12-foot mountain troll is one of them.

Right, so the symbol behind the door is the same one on the UK kids book cover. Shamelessly lifting bits from the essay Nora linked to here.

First off, a close up of the symbol on the cover.

We can see that is IS definetly identical to the symbol behind the door.

In Harry Potter, these elements are used extensively -- most notably, they are the four houses of Hogwarts: Gryffindor is Fire, Slytherin is Water, Ravenclaw is Air, and Hufflepuff is Earth. The circle represents a chemical wedding between the Sulphur Male -- in this case, Harry -- and the Mercury female -- in this case, Hermione.

The triangle here is both literal and symbolical -- there's the trio, plus the three angles of the triangle represent the Three Alchemical Principles of Nature. These are mercury, sulphur, and salt. In literary alchemy, these represent three characters showing certain characteristics. I'll list those in the next section.

The book's version of the symbol also differs from the classic one in that it has a line going up through the circle to the tip of the triangle. It's been considered that this is not actually a line, but an arrow:

A vertical arrow represents the spiritual world and a horizontal arrow represents the temporal world. It's possibly a play on the Deathly Hallows, or perhaps the veil. The US cover shows what looks like 'curtains' surrounding an empty plane where Voldemort and Harry are confronting each other -- this may be what lies beyond the veil. It's possible the Deathly Hallows represents the spiritual world.

Other people are speculating that the vertical arrow is pointing to the tip of the triangle -- something common in marriage symbols. That's not necessarily marriage as in love, but marriage as in melding or joining.

Additionally, both the symbols for mercury and the symbols for sulphur contain vertical lines. And interestingly, the mercury symbols include a circle and vertical line and the sulphur symbols contain a triangle and a vertical line.

Combine the two, and you get all the elements in the symbol on the cover of the book -- the triangle, the circle, and the vertical line.

Food for thought indeed.

ahh yes i've read that essay...TWICE. that is the essay that renewed my hope for this ship. so basically the only thing about the line is that its probably an arrow which makes sense but why would JK change the original symbol? oh well. i believe that harry will be going through the veil in book 7 so i like how the arrow might possibly represent that.

i've read many debate threads that drag alchemy into them and since alchemy is a big part of the Harmony argument other ships try to squash us by saying that Ron is sulfur or that alchemy doesnt play into the romance of the books, and well that just ticks me off. i wish there was proof somewhere in the series that could prove that alchemy does play in with the romance but unitl Harmony happens we cant really prove it.

There is nothing that marks Ron as sulphur. JKR so clearly assigned Harry to sulphur (heart, since his power is LOVE), Hermione to mercury (mind) and Ron to salt (body).

According to alchemy formula, mind and heart leave the body behind. Ron and Hermione have never left Harry behind. Harry and Hermione have repeatedly: in PS, in PoA, in OotP and most likely will again in DH.

On an entirely different note:

redshoes posted an excerpt from one of the books of JK's other favorite author, Dorothy Sayers. It is, again, the protagonist realizing their feelings for their best friend in the end:

I can totally see the same thing happening to Harry with Hermione. All the signs are there.

There aren't really any other possibilities that I know of, to be honest. I mean, the triangle and the circle are pretty clear in what they represent. However, the vertical line is debatable, I guess.

i have vote in scholastic 6 times and it looks like evrytime i vote, other harmonians also vote at the same time, it so cool ...

we get awesome talking here and my fellow harmonians post great things about our lovely ship ... I enjoy alot

at first I thought ron's sulphur becos he has many differences with hermione, but I constantly remember this is harry's story, he also has many differences with hermione, which balance each other very well we've seen on the books

may I ask: who's jonathon ross? from where you know he's h/hr shipper?

Exactly. The key is balance. Harry and Hermione do argue. The difference is that they always achieve balance through it. They compromise and move on.

harmony can argue (I love their tension in book 5 & 6, who said this ship boring?!) ... there's difference with opposite ship, harmony make compromise and BALANCE each other

funny, I have this kind relationship with my bf, now we've been 2 years ... I learn alot from harmony (I can't believe they're fictional characters lol)

He's a British TV chat show host.

Daniel Radcliffe once appeared on his show and JR asked him (paraphrasing here) "When are Harry and Hermione going to get together then?" and Dan was all "Oh, it's Ron and Hermione!" and JR was basically like "No no, sod that!" or something.

I can't remember exactly how the convo went but you get the idea.
