Newt shouldn't have been at the bank in the first place if the Niffler didn't escape. But then he won't be able to meet Jacob & Tina if the Niffler didn't escape.

He left a zipper in his suitcase open so the Niffler was able to escape. Otherwise if it was closed, he probably wouldn't venture into the bank.
