Joss Whedon on How He Staged a Career Intervention for Eliza Dushku If you're a (talented, cute, snarky) actor in search of a tough-love mentor, you could do worse than Joss Whedon. The creator of Buffy, Angel, and Firefly admits he was cajoled to finally return to television, and delay a film project or two, by protégé–Buffy nemesis Eliza Dushku. A marathon lunch at the Ivy last year yielded the idea for Dollhouse, the memory-swiped-operative-chicks show that premieres on Fox in January. "I was mentioning writers, but Eliza kept saying 'Don't you want to do it? Don't you want to do it? Look how cute I am!' And she's really cute," allowed the strawberry-blond auteur at last night's after-party for the Fox upfronts at Wollman Rink. We were impressed that Dushku held such sway over Whedon and wondered if he had that kind of bond with other actors. Whedon said that he's closer on a daily basis with Buffyverse alumni like Alyson Hannigan, Amy Acker, and Alexis Denisof. But Dushku, he said, is different. "Eliza and I are seldom in the same place for very long. And I'm an old married guy, she's a lot younger and bubblier." But he has given her plenty of career advice — a tradition that started "when I got frustrated with all these crappy horror movies she was making. Like Wrong Turn and Soul Survivor and whatnot. Those broke my heart." So Whedon staged an intervention. "I said, 'I love you. I think that you have something that no other actor I've worked with has. What can you be making these movies for? Why are you doing this to me? You're killing me! You're better than this.'" But what about the One True Slayer? "Sarah Michelle Gellar's made some really good choices," he says. "She's had some bad breaks. She goes with the independent, interesting young filmmakers and then they get slammed, like Southland Tales. I'm proud of what she's trying to do. It's hard." And onetime Angel David Boreanaz, who's now scored a lucrative role on the Fox hit Bones? "David owes me money." —Justin Ravitz

I just saw the trailer for Dollhouse... I am extremly giddy, bouncing off the walls giddy (or that could just be the litre of red bull I just drank.) how awesome does this show look!!!

When I first read the plot of the show I couldn't help but feel it was a tad similar to a show I used to watch years back 'Dark Angel' starring Jessica Alba... and watching the trailer I still feel that way... also the lab and the chair kinda reminds me of Mutant X another show I used to watch (Don't pile on me I'm not saying this is a bad thing) Looking forward to this show.

Dollhouse is similar to Dark Angel with it being a sci-fi show starring a hot star and touching on the theme of man`s evolution, but it differs from that show with it`s main subject matter being people`s fantasies.

BTW thanks for the new article. I`m so glad that Joss staged the career intervention for Eliza. If there`s anyone that could help her out, it`s him.

May 23rd 2008 - 12 AM Fewer Breaks Affect Dollhouse Writer-producer Joss Whedon told SCIFI Wire that he hadn't yet considered how his upcoming Fox SF series Dollhouse will be affected by the network's decision to air episodes with far fewer commercials and in-house promos than most shows. Dollhouse and J.J. Abrams' in-the-works Fringe are both part of Fox's Remote-Free TV experiment, which is designed to deter viewers from reaching for the remote control. One unforeseen consequence: Producers will need to deliver extra minutes in each episode for its initial broadcast, then cut those minutes for the episode's reruns, which will presumably carry more commercial interruptions. "That's a good point," Whedon said when asked about it in New York last week at Fox's upfront presentation to advertisers. "They didn't bring up the repeats. But we have always had to cut out a couple of minutes for repeats. That's always been the way. I don't really deal with that that much. But they've also said, 'We want longer versions for the DVD.' So, ultimately, I tend to shoot long. Our shows tend to go long. Some come in short. It will happen. But generally they go long. So this just means a little less heartache in the editing room." Dollhouse stars Eliza Dushku (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) as Echo, a member of an underground, illegal group of people who've had their personalities wiped clean, enabling them to be imprinted with any number of new personalities to carry out engagements at the behest of their handlers. Problems arise when Echo retains her memories and starts to question who she really is. "When we cut a show down to 40 minutes, we've got to get the best 40 minutes," Whedon said of the editing. "We're not going to be like The Office and shoot way too much, but, yeah, we're going to have a production issue about shooting just a little bit more, because even if I love it at 46 minutes, there's a chance it could be tighter. And I never want to vamp. They're not going to get a bloated first cut. They're going to get a 46-minute story." Dushku is more than just the show's leading lady; she's also one of its producers. And, according to Whedon, that's no vanity title. "That was part of her deal," Whedon said. "When we sat down to lunch--and I had no intention of creating a show for her--she said, 'I have this deal. I'm a producer.' And that's because Eliza wants to protect herself. She wants to start shaping her career. Like Echo trying to find out who she is, Eliza has been [too]. I have seen her doing this. We've had a lot of these lunches over the years, [in which she talked about] trying to take control, and gradually, over the years, [she's done it]. It's very hard for an ingénue to do that." Whedon added: "I said, 'Oh, wow, I've come up with a show, and I’ll do it with you, but you have to know, though, this thing about you having a producer credit: I'm going to make you earn it. I'm going to want your input. I'm going to want ideas. I'm going to want you to help me work out certain problems. This is our show.' She and I came at it from a very similar aesthetic view, a very similar political view and a great mutual trust. So, to me, it's an essential part of what the show says about people and about her, that she should be a producer." Dollhouse will premiere in early 2009. --Ian Spelling

I just saw this on TV yesterday. It's a shame Eliza's name wasn't higher up on the list cuz how could she be #38 and SMG be #5? I have nothing against SMG, but I just don't get it! Eliza's a total hottie!!

Don`t worry about it. We all know that Dollhouse will get her into the top 10 next year. Of course i do hope that Eliza will do another sexy covershoot for Maxim. It would be a nice way to promote Dollhouse and give us a sexy treat.

That would be cool. As long as it's not too over the top because I've always admired Eliza for not doing anything overly risque. Yes, she has a gorgeous body, but that doesn't mean she should exploit it. You can be sexy without being slutty. And Eliza encapsulates every bit of sexy!
