Analysis of the Buffy/Faith dream sequence in Graduation Day #2

We are inside of Faith's apartment. A house or apartment is known as the "seat of the soul". Buffy knows as she enters this place that it is a symbol of Faith herself. The first image the audience and Buffy see is of three blue candles in three long candlestick holders. The candles let us know that she will be trying to clarify something that she does not understand, knowledge or wisdom that has not fully crystallized. Blue is the color of the primal energy from which the universal life-force comes. Blue in all of its forms was also described as the color of depression.

As Buffy walks farther into the apartment she is metaphorically walking farther into Faith's mind. There are boxes everywhere, packed with Faith's belongings. In essence, Faith's emotions are often hidden from others. Buffy too, for that mattter, boxes up her feelings. Compartmentalizing traumatic experiences is a very important quality among people with dangerous, high stress jobs that require rapid-fast decision making. It makes perfect sense that two Slayers (the Chosen Two, as Faith says), whose life mission is supposed to be saving the lives of billions of innocent humans and battling unspeakable evil would have a lot of overwhelming emotions and fears to temporarily bottle up in order to "get the job done". However, both females simply go too far. They need to express their emotions more often. They need to be more willing and able to confide in others. They were given something denied to every Slayer who preceded them. Each other. A sister Slayer.

Buffy's blue, long sleeved shirt symbolizes the universal or collective unconscious. The dream is asking her to base her life on intuitions that come from a deep source within her psyche. However, it also stands for masculinity. She needs to get in touch with her animus (the masculine side of her psyche, being represented here as Faith) and enter into dialogue with it with a view to establishing a more positive relationship both with the masculine in herself and also with real men in the external world.

Buffy watches as a cat meows and jumps onto a bed. Bast, the Egyption goddess of cats, is depicted as having two sides to her nature, one devious and one helpful. Faith can be extremely devious but in the astral realm of this dream she is going to be helpful.

Buffy: Whose going to take care of him?

Faith appears behind her wearing an orange and white striped tank top with a black bra underneath. The orange symbolizes her aggressiveness while also showing a new attitude of proper self-love, a cheerful, uplifting independence. The white symbolizes the innocence and spiritual purity she once had and the wisdom she may one day achieve. The black lets us know that underneath a lot of her aggressiveness is despair and a deep depression. Faith is a stormy sea of negative emotions.

The primary two female influences in her life before Buffy were her alcoholic mother and her strict watcher. Both deceased. "My dead mother hits harder than that!" "He killed my watcher...I saw what he did to her" It does not seem as if growing up she had an emotional outlet and by the time she escapes to Sunnydale to hook up with the resident demon fighter she doesn't know how to deal. She can wrestle alligators and wage war on the vampire population but doesn't have what it takes yet to combat her own tortured psyche. She came to the inaccurate conclusion that she could only rely on herself and to always look after numero uno. She would quickly lose trust in others if she feared, even in the slightest, the possibility of being emotionally hurt.

Faith: It's a she. And aren'ts these things supposed to take care of themselves?
Buffy: A higher power guiding us.
Faith (smiles): I'm pretty sure that's not what I meant.

It is not the mysterious Powers That Be that will protect them from harm. It is themselves. While a strong belief in a higher power has proved an essential componenet for the survival of the human species, self-reliance and belief is equally if not more important. It was by once again believing in herself that saved Buffy from a misery-filled future trapped in a demon dimension in Anne (Anne is Old English for "full of grace"). She didn't wait to be rescued. She relcaimed her voice. Fate is what you make it. Everyone holds the power over their own destiny and well-being. Buffy has thwarted prophecy time and time again. Just by being alive at the same time Buffy and Faith are defying the supposedly natural order of Slayerdom. Into every generation ONE Slayer is born. There can be only ONE. Says who?

Faith walks away from Buffy and towards the window that Buffy crashed them through earlier. Windows describe the means by which we appreciate the world we live in, the way we perceive reality. The fact that she is looking through the window from the inside shows that she has an extrovert view of herself and will tend to look at external circumstances. She is a blamer. Instead of taking responsibility for her actions and for her life, she allows herself to be swept away by her sins and vices in complete denial of her own control. In her mind, she doesn't do wrong, wrong things are done to her. She boasts of her physical power and sexual prowess while declaring to be powerless and having everything out of her control. At some point she may have been the victim but it hasn't occured to her that somewhere along the way she became the agressor.

The broken window represents the loss, damage, shattered idealism, and exinct hope within Faith. But sunlight streams through the window, bathing her in its brilliance. This symbolizes a fresh start, an opening to a promise-filled future. As night is the symbol of the uncounscious, so dawn symbolizes the raising of unconscious contents into consciousness--a prerequisite of personal growth. An illumination is taking place, she's "seeing the light". We are are seeing her true but not yet achieved self.

I changed my mind. It's too much words to type up. I finished it I just have to type the whole thing onto FF. Maybe some other time.

I'm in need of vacation. the first thing I'm going to do when the time is there is read some Fuffy fics, watch some Fuffy slashy eps and oogle Eliza.
