The music of The Beatles - then or now?
Do you think music in general was better back when The Beatles were “new”? If not, what bands of today do you think make music of the same quality? If so, what other bands did you listen to when you first got into the Fab Four? For me, I guess music is kinda like a wine – it improves with age. Seems like it usually takes me until about five years after everyone else has stopped listening to a song that I finally “get” it. I think I just have a hard time dealing with anything new or popular because I have a sentimental attachment to the way it was before and I assume the new stuff is tainted by too much commercialism. Does that make any sense? I feel like bands such as The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, etc., have yet to be improved upon.

btw, Led Zeppelin's live DVD and CD sets came out yesterday (at least according to the Led Zeppelin website they did). I plan to get them this weekend, but I was curious to know if anyone has already gotten either of these yet. If so, how is it?

You know... I would think that a Beatles forum would be a lot more conversational than this...

Hi jfalk68
I was born after the Beatles already separated, but I grew up listening to them and I have always liked their music. I'm partial to the music they made up to the album Rubber Soul. I don't really like their later music too much, but they still had some good songs even then, like Hey Jude and Let it Be. My favorite music is from the 1950s and 1960s. I think music in general went downhill in the 1970s. I'm a big fan of Elvis, the Doors, Buddy Holly, and many Motown artists from the 1960s, like Marvin Gaye. I'm a fan of some singers and bands of today's music, but I don't like them as much as I like the old music. Just the sound and quality of music has changed in the last 30 years and I don't think that it has changed for the better. |

Hi DC! I like all eras of the Beatles. Rubber Soul is probably my favorite Beatles album. When I think about all the songs they put out there, I can't think of very many that weren't really good. It's amazing. I feel the same way about Zeppelin. Are you also a Zeppelin fan?

My favorite Beatles albums are With the Beatles and Beatles for Sale. The soundtracks to A Hard Day's Night and Help are also really good. Rubber Soul has a lot of good songs. I especially like the songs "If I needed someone," "I'm looking through you," and "In my life." I'm not a fan of Led Zeppelin though.

Well I liked With the Beatles, and Let it Be, and they were good songs on all the albums I thought. Hey I'm a Zeppelin fan too!

Hi, everyone, I'm probably the youngest person on this Fan Forum, seen as I'm only 13. I agree with jfalk68 music does improve with age. And my favourite album is the Magical Mystery Tour and Rubber Soul. I also love the White Album and Abbey Road but they're all great.

Since Alice.S pointed out that she's probably the youngest poster on this forum, well, I'll point out that I'm probably one of the oldest (turn 49 this coming Monday).
No, I don't think music was necessarily "better" back when the Beatles first came out. I was in elementary school when the Beatles began, so I grew up with their music and have always loved it. I can't even begin to tell you my favorite Beatle album or song because I truly love them all. I have special memories attached to music from the 60's since that's when I grew up. The music I listened to along with the Beatles was the English invasion including Dave Clark Five, Dusty Springfield, and Herman's Hermits, the psychedelic music of Cream and Jimmy Hendricks, the folksy music of the Mamas and the Papas, good music by Eric Burton and the Animals, The Turtles, the Rolling Stones, Lovin' Spoonful, and the beach music of groups like Jan and Dean, and the Beach Boys. My favorite artists through the years have remained the Beatles, and groups like the Stones, Chicago, and the Moody Blues. Yes, music has changed and evolved over the years and yet, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Musicians still write beautiful melodies, haunting tunes and lyrics that speak to and from our hearts and souls. Aside from rap and hip-hop (which doesn't interest me outside of it's beat), I still enjoy new music being made today. I dig artists like Sheryl Crow, Tom Petty, Collective Soul, Days of the New, Metallica, Coldplay, Josh Groban, and alot of "New Age" artists like Clannad and Lorenna McKennitt. I guess I sorta have an eclectic taste for music, and I still hear alot of excellent, beautiful sounds in today's music that I enjoy immensely. __________________

I don't think it was better but it makes me feel different than today's music does. If I hear say a song that I love by Foo Fighters on the radio I'll just turn it up. But if I hear a song by a band that I love from the 50s, 60s or 70s I get so excited and it makes my whole day brighter. Like I was listening to the radio in the shower this morning and 'D'yer Maker' by Led Zep came on and I actually let out a little shriek of happiness. I think it's because I'm only 16 and I never got to experience first hand.

I've enjoyed The Beatles progression throughout the years.

Although I love all of their music, my fav era is the Rubber Soul/Revolver era. That's when they went from Bubble gum music, (well not really Bubble gum music. Their music was always much better than that)to lyrics with deep meaning and they started using other instruments.
I agree that the Beatles improve with age. I started listening to the Beatles when the Anthology came out. I love them more now, then I did back then. I appreciate them more as musicians. It has also given me plenty of time to "get" their music. There is so much more to their music. __________________

I remember when I first borrowed my dad's girlfriend's Reader's Digest Beatles box thing. I was listening to the songs going "Oh my god! I didn't know they sung this song. I love this song!"
There were so many songs that I had grown up with and I didn't even know they sung them! It was a bit of a revelation for me, actually. __________________

The other thing I really like is the fact that their music speaks and appeals to people of all ages......from someone who's 12 to someone who's 75. It's testiment to the quality and brilliance of their music. I know new generations have also discovered the music of Elvis, the Doors and the Stones, but the universal love of the Beatles music outshines all the others, I think. __________________

Thelma, that is so true. I know every word to every song and my mum, who grew up through those times, is like "How can you know the words better than me?" My mum's not the biggest Beatles fan, though, she's more into Elvis. It's actually because my mum was young in the 60s that I like 60s music, and I can now appreciate all sorts of music. Before The Beatles I was mostly into pop, and of course I've always loved 60s music, but I think The Beatles have hepled me appreciate bands that write their own songs more.
