The only reason that they didn't end up hooking up was because he met Reese literally the week he was going to be leaving to film IKWYDLS. Apparently she made a big impression at the party and they decided to write each other while he filmed the movie.

Imagine if he hadn't met her at that party? If he had stayed home that night. He would have entered the IKWYDLS set completely single.
