I know that a lot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans and Buffy Anne Summers fans are vehemently against Satsu for having had the opportunity to wrinkle the sheets with our beloved heroine. But there will probably never be a BtVS movie which means that the graphic novel series is canon and Satsu was a part of Buffy's life and does count as her fifth but probably not last lover. Though we do not get to watch the phenomenal Sarah Michelle Gellar act this storyline out (I'd hope for it to be with Summer Glau) her image was used to illustrate Buffy in the comics. It is supposed to be the continuation of our favorite Slayer's journey as the Head of the Watchers Council and Queen of the Slayers.

I think that Satsu is a good person and that she has a lot of respect and admiration for Buffy. She seemed to be Buffy's second in command and favorite ally for her dedication and loyalty.

Buffy is not a lesbian. The BtVS comics never said she was or that she was in love with Satsu. Having a one-night stand with a female friend did not make her want to shout "Hello, gay now!" or make her no longer attracted to men. She is still straight or at the very least bisexual. She valued her relationship with Satsu and in a moment of loneliness and sexual frustration and curiosity she made love to someone that was in love with her.

It does not take anything away from Spuffy or Bangel. Buffy does not know Spike is alive--I suspect she will be rather hurt and angry to find out he let her believe he was dead for nearly two years--and is not ready to even contemplate being with Angel again yet (she did say years, if ever).

I love one of the issues right after it called Swell. It had Kennedy come in "as the other lesbian slayer" and try to help Satsu deal with having let herself get physically involved with a straight girl she had strong romantic feelings for even though she knew the straight girl was, well, straight.

I don't think of what had happened as Buffy using Satsu or Buffy becoming a cliche. When you are lonely and have this person that believes in you and that you get along with really well, of course you are going to try to explore the possibility that maybe you were missing something and give it a shot. Buffy had been alone since Spike's death for nearly two years. Her responsibility and burdens were as great as ever. She needed an emotional and physical outlet. Wanting a significant other or even just a lover doesn't make you a bad person or any less feminist. And she hasn't suddenly become a gay icon because she slept with a female one or two times when she was 23.

Buffy was never disgusted by the thought of female sexual relationships. I've never seen her look at Willow/Tara or Willow/Kennedy as if it were repulsive or naturally wrong. In New Moon Rising she was just shocked, as were the rest of the Scooby Gang. She never thought any less of Willow or her girlfriends for being attracted to the same gender.

Buffy has had a fairly diverse sexual background. Angel. Parker. Riley. Spike. She was attracted to Dracula.

Who is Satsu and is there development between her and Buffy before the sex?

Satsu is a Korean girl raised by conservative parents that got changed into a Slayer when Willow did the spell in Chosen. We first meet her in the S8 comics. There was some development before they slept together. Each issue would show a little bit more between them. It was obvious from The Long Way Home (the first s8 arc) that Buffy favored Satsu over the other Slayers. She would compliment her hair. She is one of the main Slayers that Buffy would fight alonside. Some of the others included Rowena and Leah. When she was allowed to bring one person with her to rescue Willow--she had gotten kidnapped by Amy--she brought Satsu. Satsu is an amazing fighter and a dedicated Slayer but there were a few other girls who would have been a better choice and everyone knew it.

She had a need to prove herself to Buffy and really tried to earn Buffy's admiration. I thought it was funny that she even used to call Buffy "ma'am" not knowing how formal you should be with the Head of the Watchers Council and Queen of the Slayers. The other Slayers would tease Satsu cutely since they knew she was a lesbian and was in love with Buffy. When Amy put Buffy under a spell so that she would be trapped in her dreamspace until kissed by someone that is passionately in love with her, it was Satsu that was able to awaken her. Satsu let herself believe that Buffy could feel the same way about her but as Kennedy said "Sleeping Beauty isn't gay. And neither is Buffy".

After they slept together Buffy didn't want to continue with it because she had gone down that road with Riley and Spike already. Being physically intimate with someone that is in love with you when you don't feel the same way. She knew that if she had a fling with her or even tried to date her it would end badly and with Satsu heartbroken. Satsu decided to stay in Korea for a while--she had been living in Scotland at the Slayer Headquarters--to distance herself from Buffy while she healed emotionally from knowing she didn't have a romantic future with her. It is really too bad Buffy couldn't have realized she shouldn't sleep with her until after she slept with her. At least she stopped it the same week it started.

I don't think there is.

Buffy seems to want to forget that night happened even though she enjoyed it and told Satsu that. She is acting as if Satsu is just a really good Slayer and she is her leader. It must be really weird to try to take back something like having sex with one of your friends. Everyone found out about it the morning after since Xander and Andrew walked into Buffy's bedroom to tell her something and caught her naked in bed with Satsu. Giant Dawn--Dawn had been temporarily transformed into a giant--heard the commotion and looked in the window to see them together. Buffy just needed some form of comfort. Her friendships with everyone--except Xander, they get along really well lately--have callapsed and here was this person that she knew wouldn't backstab her or give her grief. She never meant to hurt her. She was kidding herself to think that nothing bad would happen if she started another friends-with-benefits relationship with someone she knew had feelings for her.

If Satsu no longer had romantic feelings for Buffy, I think they could be friends-with-benefits for awhile. In the long run though Buffy would need to find a man. She is just not a lesbian and isn't really that bi either (we haven't seen her be attracted to women in general). After a few months she would probably tire of the arrangement even if it is with someone that could match her stamina.

I think that Buffy will always care a lot for Satsu since she is the kind of person that can't not have feelings for someone after having been sexually intimate with them. I'm not sure if Buffy could ever really be the kind of person to have one night stands or hookups without trying to force a relationship or the situation turning into a disaster.

We see Buffy again in close-up, her green eyes looking thoughtful, as Willow speaks about her again.
WILLOW: She’s not like us.
In another wide-view, we see Buffy standing alone while her Slayers pass the time.

In a close-up, Willow and Satsu are in close-up. Satsu looks resigned and disappointed.

After reading the transcripts for A Beautiful Sunset and Wolves At the Gate I don't think that Buffy is at all at fault for "leading Satu on". She told her BEFORE they slept together that she is not in love with her, they don't have a romantic future together, and that she is not gay. And Satsu still made the deicsion to jump into bed with Buffy. Its not Buffy's fault that Satsu hoped that Buffy would change her mind after they slept together. Of course I feel sorry for Satsu. Who wouldn't, if given the opportunity, make love to the person they are in love with?
