The artists who draw the comics are very talented but sometimes the characters don`t look that similar to the ones on the tv show.

I agree that season 8 was a total mess for the series but luckily it regained its footing with season 9 and onward. I did a binge read not too long and I really enjoyed the character depictions and conflicts. Haven't gotten around to fully enter season 11 just yet but the opening plot they came in with the premiere issue grabbed my attention (won't spoil just in case), but yeah season 8 was awkward and probably just trying to find its footing as far as continuity, doesn't excuse the way they mistreated some of the characters and plot lines whatsoever, but yeah.
