Is Michelle still in this?:

Literature Revisited: Top 5 Films in 2009 Based on Books

"WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE"
What little kid didn't want to be Max, all dressed up in a wolf costume with no dinner to eat but with tons of monsters to play with? The children's book by Maurice Sendak captured many a child's imagination, made scary-looking monsters friendly and lovable and will hit the big screen in October, directed by the one and only Spike Jonze, former husband of hipster film queen Sofia Coppola, current boyfriend of Michelle Williams and music-video genius. After years of controversy — the film was dropped by Universal, and rumors came out last year that Warner Bros. was thinking about completely redoing Jonze's version — "Where the Wild Things Are" will hopefully live up to all the hype; if not, who are we supposed to blame? Pretty much everyone associated with the film (Jonze; Dave Eggers, who wrote the screenplay; and actors Forest Whitaker and Paul Dano) is awesome — only good things can come of this.

He cites three that are "very much of this world": Sundance entry "The Messenger"; "Storm," from German helmer Hans-Christian Schmid ("Requiem"); and Lukas Moodysson's "Mammoth," with Gael Garcia Bernal and Michelle Williams.

He's especially excited about "Mammoth," which follows a New York workaholic whose life unravels when he goes to Thailand on business.

"I'm really looking forward to how this will be received, as it's quite an accomplishment, showing something very complicated -- how private lives are affected by globalization -- in a clear way."

Berlinale 59 Preview: Mammoth

“Mammoth” features Gael Garcia Bernal (”Amores Perros,” “Y Tu Mamá También,” “The Motorcycle Diaries”) and Michelle Williams (”The Station Agent,” “Brokeback Mountain,” “Wendy and Lucy”) as a successful New York couple whose busy careers have consequently taken a toll on both their own lives and, albeit indirectly, the lives of the individuals around them.

Leo (Garcia Bernal) handles entrepreneurial decisions for his booming website; Ellen (Williams) spends long hours dedicated to saving lives as an emergency surgeon. Tom’s business ventures eventually land him a trip to Thailand that changes his life forever; Ellen grows increasingly frustrated as she struggles to spend time with her own daughter because of the nature of her work. Triangulating the narrative is Gloria (Marife Necesito), the couple’s Filipino maid, whose absence from the Philippines is a cause of discontent for her own loved ones back home.

Swedish filmmaker Lukas Moodysson (”Show Me Love,” “Together,” “Lilja 4-ever”) directs in the English language for the first time, weaving together a tale of three individuals across national boundaries and cultural dividing lines. It’s all inevitably reminiscent of Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s “Babel”, but here’s hoping Moodysson’s unique approach toward cinema—combining rich naturalism with profound Christian spiritualism—can push “Mammoth” above the sea of hyperlink movies dealing with the collective human experience that has emerged in recent years.

Pains of OFW separation from kids shown in Swedish indie film

MANILA, Philippines - Filipinos in Western-produced movies are often reduced to roles of a maid with a crooked English accent or worse, a Chinese kung fu master.

But once in a while a movie like Mammoth comes along. The independent film, which was released in theaters in Sweden last week, features the character of a Filipino domestic helper who longs to be home with her son in the Philippines.

What makes Mammoth different from other films – indie or mainstream – is that the Filipino character does not merely sit on the sidelines, scrubbing floors or changing bed covers, but is pivotal in the main characters’ change of heart.

Mammoth tells the story of Leo (Gael Garcia Bernal) and Ellen (Michelle Williams), a successful New York couple, who are both so immersed with their work, their live-in housekeeper Gloria (Marife Necesito) becomes the parent-figure for their eight-year-old daughter.

When Leo flew to Thailand on a business trip, his wife Ellen, a surgeon, realizes that she needs to prioritize her child more, seeing how their nanny has established a closer relationship with her daughter.

At the same time, Gloria’s own family back in the Philippines struggles to deal with her absence. (See movie trailer here)

Swedish film director Lukas Moodysson, who had always been intrigued with the concept of the family and the fragile role of the child in it, casts two main Filipino actors in the film – Necesito and her sons in the film played by Jan David Nicdao (as Salvador) and Martin de los Santos.

“I think one of the things I’m always interested in the family in particular are the children. How grownups are treating children and how they are treated in this world," Moodysson said in a recent press conference.

There are other themes Mammoth wishes to convey to the audience, Moodysson said. Among this is the social cost of migration.

“Longing maybe, missing someone or something?" Moodysson said.

On Wednesday, the film cast, including the two Filipino actors, were invited to the opening of the Berlinale Film Festival in Germany where Mammoth is in competition, Nicdaos’ father told GMANews.TV.
