Back when I was on the pep squad, we relished the opportunity to show off our team spirit by wearing our uniforms to school. Jen: Grams, I hate to break it to you, but you were showing off a bit more than just team spirit. Grams: Jennifer. ------------------------------ [Scene: The Cheerleader group. Jen comes up to join them.] Cheerleader: Hey, we missed you this morning at the spirit table. Where were you? We were worried about you. Jen: Look, you guys, I stayed really late at that pep rally yesterday, um, I have limits. Cheerleader: Is this a low-iron day? Yeah, try not to let anyone else see you, 'cause it might hurt the auction. Jen: Auction? Cheerleader: The silent auction. Yeah, you should be really proud. It's like the most successful one we've ever had. Like, half the senior guys have already put in their bids Jen: What are you auctioning off? Cheerleader: Well, the winner gets to ride in on the minuteman mule at the end of the game. Jen: Uh-huh.. Cheerleader: And receive a kiss from the head cheerleader. Jen: Oh, no, they don't. Cheerleader: Now, Jenny— Jen. Jen: Ok? It's Jen. You know, this whole thing just started as a bad joke, an excuse to get out some excess energy, but do you see what it's turned into? I have pranced around in front of this entire school at pep rallies without even knowing what the hell pep is. I have listened to clack and prattle about car washes, dance-a-thons, and dog-sitting until I think I'm gonna puke up my homemade spirit cookies. Cheerleader: Jenny— Jen: And despite this itch I am getting on my ass from this polyester molest-me skirt, I've done it all with a smile on my face. But you know what ladies, the smile is gone. I'm sorry, but there is no way I'm going to be sold off like some harem girl to the highest bidder. Everyone has a limit, and I've reached mine. I quit. -------------------------------- [Scene: Cheerleader practice by the football field. Jack and Jen are watching them practice.] [Whistle blows] Cheerleaders: 1, 2, 3, 4! We don't care if we don't score! 5, 6, 7, 8! 2 points would be really great. That's all right. That's ok. You're gonna work for us someday. Go, Capeside! Jen: What do you think? Jack: Jen, this is for a pep rally. Don't you think they should be s-slightly more... you know, optimistic. Jen: I know, Jack. I've tried. Believe me, I've tried. Think I want to be held responsible for killing off the last vestiges of Capeside's school spirit? Ever since they elected me leader of their little... All they want to do are these nasty, sardonic, self-aware cheers. Worse, they've even started to dress like me. It's like they're genetically predisposed to having absolutely no identity. Jack: Yeah. That's the blonde gene. Jen: Not funny. Oh, watch it! [A football comes over the fence and Jack catches it and throws it back.] Jen: Jack, nice catch. Jack: Bad throw. ----------------------- [Scene: Inside the School Hallway. Jen is walking down the hall in a daze. When Jack runs up to her.] Jack: Hi, Jen. What's the matter? You look like your dog just died. Jen: I don't have a dog. Jack: Yeah. I know that. Jen: Oh, yeah, you do know that, don't you? Jack: Seriously, what is it? [A stranger say something as they walk by in the hall.] Stranger: Ooh. Way to go. Jack: Who's that? Jen: No idea. Oh, god. [she tries to hide her face as she walk by some cheerleaders.] Cheerleader: Yeah! Oh! Ha ha ha! Jack: Why? What's… Jen: The unthinkable has happened. Principal Green: Good job, Ms. Lindley. Jack: What? You've become popular? Jen: Worse. It was a coup deétat, a mutiny, a slave revolt, really. Belinda McGovern has been excommunicated by her brainless bishops. Jack: You gotta help me out here 'cause I don't know what you're talking about. [She opens her locker and pulls out a PomPom.] Jen: They're the golden ones... With the rhinestone-studded handles. | Michelle Williams: I suppose Montana is in my bones, though when I told my mother that we were working on our accents ‘cause we’re [playing characters] from Wyoming, she said, “What are you talking about? We don’t have accents.” It was an interesting accent to work on and pin down, because it’s not as typical as a Southern accent. You haven’t heard it a lot in film. The danger was to overdo it. I met Joy in Billings, Montana and we drove down to Riverton, Wyoming. I soaked up the atmosphere and looked at people and places. It was so wonderful to be on a project where they allowed you to do that. I’ve never come across that [before]; “Yeah, sure, take a rental car, follow whatever path you want for a couple of days, get what you can, and come back to us.” It was great Michelle Williams: [My character,] Alma has been expanded upon [from the story], but faithfully translated and cared for. Diana was a great guide if you ever got a little lost, because she’d lived with these people for seven years and takes them very seriously – as seriously as if they were real. She was able to talk about them as if she’d met them. Michelle Williams: Initially, Alma has exactly what she wanted – what she’s been raised to want all of her life; a family and a home, a husband and children. When she sees her husband and Jack together, she probably doesn’t even know exactly how to identify it at first, ‘cause it’s so out of the realm of her consciousness, of her world. She’s too afraid to speak [of] it, so she holds onto it and it boils and brews inside of her.
