For a show that purported itself to be about friendship, I thought that the concept of true friendship was something that was largely ignored by the writers of Dawson’s Creek, especially in the case of Dawson and Joey, who spent more time over the seasons estranged and apart then they did together and happy, even as friends, and for all practical purposes, Dawson and Joey’s friendship ended as soon as he kissed her at the end of Breaking Away. Over the years, we saw Dawson and Joey refer to each other as “soulmates,” but I honestly can’t say that they were, because they really treated each other horribly at times, and they both neglected their friendship to the point where we saw that they really hadn’t kept in touch when we caught up with them in the Series Finale, and so their final “soulmate” declaration in that finale rang completely hollow to me.

Similarly, Pacey and Dawson’s friendship pretty much ended once Pacey and Joey fell in love, and even before that, they often seemed more like rivals than friends. Looking back, I really can’t point to any genuine friendship on the show that didn’t either have romantic undercurrents, or which wasn’t ruined in some fashion.

There was one notable exception to this, however, and that was the friendship of Jack McPhee and Jen Lindley. I honestly feel that Jack and Jen’s friendship was the best friendship that we ever saw on Dawson’s Creek. This friendship was a surprising and welcome development at the end of Season Two, and it continued throughout the rest of the seasons except for the time when Jack became “Frat Jack” and he turned his back on Jen and all of his friends, and both characters benefited enormously from this association. Jack and Jen reached out to each other in a way that was really unique on Dawson’s Creek, and provided each other with the understanding and unconditional acceptance that marks true friendship. Jack reached out to Jen at her most vulnerable point, when she had been thrown out by Grams, and rejected by her mother, and he offered her understanding, a shoulder to cry on, and a place to live. Jen, in turn, repaid Jack’s kindness by offering him a place to live when Grams accepted her back, and Mr. McPhee was ready to sell their house. Both Jack and Jen had a hard life in many ways, and they had to deal with absentee and/or emotionally remote parents, and they both had to adjust to a life in a new town, and I loved the way that they supported one another through the years, and they encouraged each other in subtle ways, and their friendship and support of each other allowed them to do things that their characters hadn’t done before. I also loved the honesty in their friendship and the love and affection that they felt for one another, and we really got to see that in a moving and poignant way in the series finale, when Jack told Jen that she belonged to him, and that she was his soulmate.

Even before then, in Season Three, I was really touched when Jen told Jack that what disappointed her most about Jack having Henry meet her instead of him was that “You don't get it. This was our place. Yours and mine. Doesn't that mean something to you?”, and then went on to say “I've had lovers, I've had boyfriends, but what I've never had is a boy who was first and last a friend.” To me, those words were heartfelt, honest, and moving, and reflected the genuine feelings of friendship between them. I also loved the way that Jen encouraged Jack to accept his sexual identity, and the way she told him that “Jack, you're going to have a love life. You're going to have a fantastic love life. It's gonna be awesome, and terrifying, and, and when it happens it's going to change your whole life.”

In short, I truly loved the friendship of Jack and Jen, and I feel that they were the true “soulmates” of Dawson’s Creek.
