Has anyone actually read the novel upon which this film has based?

I got it from the library because I like the author (who also wrote Mystic River and Gone, Baby, Gone) and because I wanted to see exactly what Michelle's character would be. Thus far, it doesn't seem like her role is super huge but still important. Seeing as the circumstances of the character are what they are (sorry, don't want to spoil it for anyone) I wonder how much actual screentime Michelle is going to have.

I do love Martin Scorsese. He always does an amazing job. And with a cast like this film has, I hope it lives up to all the buzz.

I haven't read the novel but apparently Michelle's role in the film is pretty important and offers a good chance to show her acting ability.

I just finished reading the book. And Michelle's character is quite importnat to the storyline. But, still, her character's role in the book isn't as extensive as I thought it would be. It'll be interesting to see how they interject her into the film.

But I agree that it is definately a role which will allow her to display some of that talent we know she has. Even though the author tends to write his female characters a little flat (the little girl's mother in Gone, Baby, Gone, which he also wrote, is a great example), the right actress can breathe a lot of life into them. I look what Amy Ryan had to work with a few years ago (in Gone, Baby, Gone) and she ended up scoring herself an Oscar nomination. No doubt in my mind that Michelle can do the same.
