In general, do animators only draw 3 fingers and a thumb per hand? There must be a reason behind that. Hmm, come to think of it, even the Muppets only have 3 fingers and a thumb on each hand.

It is quite a common thing for cartoons to only have 3 fingers & 1 thumb, but not all cartoons do. In Ben 10, for example, the characters have 4 fingers and a thumb.

I actually haven't noticed it in other cartoons.. guess I should start watching for that haha. It's just such a common subject when it comes to the simpsons.

I always wondered that too Cyn. Maybe just to make it more of a cartoon to not be entirely the same as real life, but south park is just a circle and a smaller circle unless shown closer.

I had an accident with a meat slicer when I was in college. Shaved the thumb, didn't cut it off.
