Thank you so much for bringing that up!

That was such a perfect birthday gift I'm proud of the fandom,

Really fun interview. I love how he describes touring with the band as a battlefield And the way he talks about his experiences as a seventies trekkie Man, I wish I too had been to those conventions

But ... the depiction of Spike as lower class briton? As a vampire, he certainly belonged to the underworld, but William clearly didnt. Everything we saw of him spoke of a cultivated dandy, who went to posh parties and wrote poetry. So that working class, tough guy attitude seemed to have been very much adopted. Like, how he wanted to be, while it was the finery he struggled to get away from

Yes, I think that's where his respect for Joss Whedon comes from...that he could really surprise James and always turn things on their head and go a different way. James was so against poor William at first and then he saw that it was the absolutely most perfect way to add layers to Spike.

I finally had the time to dive into a whole bout of convids. I particularly love this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8GSG7JeHpw

I've never heard him say so much about Sullivan before So, he's getting his college degree in political science, has a really nice girlfriend, and works for an environmentalist political campaign. as one of their best canvassers If he has got his dad's gifts for swaying other people's feelings, I'm sure he can reach far in politics

There is nothing he likes to talk about more than Sullivan. He is one proud Papa.

And has good reason for it too, it seems

Another thing I liked from todays con-vid binge is a comment on how he was the only one on set who were able to figure out how Joss' mind worked, well enough to predict what would happen next By simply taking the expected, and turning it on it's head

The soul gain scene comes to mind though. I'm stil a bit miffed that Joss won that guessing game...

That one doesn't seem quite fair. James said he would have played it differently if he had known. Some things didn't make much sense in the way that played out. But surprise?? Oh, yeah, I'll give him that.

it would have made a whole lot more sense if played differently. It wouldn't have to be anything revealing either. Just more determination and less anger, for example.

I really think Joss should have trusted him a bit more about this.

I agree. Actually in hindsight thinking that he could have gone to get the chip out, because that's what Buffy "deserved" doesn't make sense in light of how horrified Spike looked when it dawned on him that this time round it hadn't been another case of Buffy saying no and meaning yes, but that he had actually tried to force her.

If that appalled him, why would he go and make himself dangerous again so he could kill her? That would only make sense if she fought him off and he was only angry and frustrated at being denied, not horrified at himself, and James didn't play the bathroom scene that way.

So the anger afterwards didn't make that much sense to me. I agree that determination would have been a better option. The attitude wouldn't have been "The B**ch deserves death, and I'll make myself able to give it to her." but rather "Buffy deserves to be able to trust me that I'll never do anything like that again."

Indeed. Joss was always all about giving people a shock, but in this case I think he went too far in that, to the extent that it hurt the shows consistency and message.
