I think traditional TV is a long ways away from being extinct, but it is definitely true that streaming, DVR, and so on have greatly changed the way people consume shows.

I don‘t know many high quality network shows anymore. A good portion of the good tv shows you hear of these days are on streaming or cable (aside of sitcoms, reality, talkshows etc of course). I think a lot depends on the future of bet neutrality (as for the future of streaming at least)

Also, ratings are done by Nielson. Which means, your view only counts if you have Nielson box, which most Americans do not have.

So, even I did have cable and watched live, my viewing wouldn't count towards the ratings. But me watching on Hulu or Freeform's website...that counts.

Nielson is really just an estimate of viewers

Though I believe advertisers still rely heavily on live views despite all the ways in which shows are consumed now. Live views still are considered the most important.

And you're right, Jackie. Streaming that way can have a great impact.
