Far better than BtVS season 8 if you ask me. I want to order it but have no idea where to begin and I'm too lazy to research right now. ![]() __________________ Once Bitten, Forever Smitten!![]() See Shiri Appleby in 'ER' this fall! What I do know - Angel and the dragon he wanted to slay at the end actually became allies and Angel rides on his back. Gunn is made into a vampire. Wes is brought back to life like how WR&H brought back Lilah because of their contracts. __________________ Once Bitten, Forever Smitten!![]() See Shiri Appleby in 'ER' this fall! Icon by coccy

Now *that* is interesting...How will they balance that out? I mean, Angel is the 'main' vampire...then there's Spike...but now Gunn too?? Just how will they pull this off...Will he be a big bad ass vampire? He couldn't possibly have a soul...too many people have sung that tune. __________________ Angel: I love you. Buffy: I love you. I'm pretty excited, because the reviews have been great. Angel After the Fall : Vol. 1 Just a reminder, speculations are fine. | Miranda asked for me to bring over the Angel:After The Fall news over here like I bring it over on the Buffy board in the Buffy season 8 thread. On the Buffy board I bring over both season 8 and After The Fall news. Here,I'll just bring over the Angel:After The Fall stuff unless it's something that is a combination of season 8/After The Fall. Then I'll bring it over here too. To start things off, Here are my comments about issue 1 of Angel:After The Fall. Some general bullet points. -L.A is in hell sent by the senior partners to punish Angel. -Angel's last stand against Wolfram and Hart in NFA accomplished nothing and actually left things in a worse state for Angel, the city and the people he cares about. -Angel is still tied to W&H and operating out of their building. He still has to work for them. -If Angel lifts another finger against them, the senior partners will send L.A. to a even worse hell dimension then the one the city is already in.Angel is caught between a rock and a hard place. -Angel didn't slay the dragon,he made it a ally. -Wesley is back.He is Angel's new liaison to the senior partners just like Eve and Hamilton were.Wes is bound to W&H.Just like Lilah in season 4,he has a contract the extends into the afterlife. He's in a ghost/non corporeal state sort of like Spike was in season 5.He's not happy about this wanting to be released from his contract and move on.So Wes is still dead but tied to W&H as their last Official Representative of the L.A. branch. -The blonde woman with Connor and Gwen is Nina(guess she didn't make it out of L.A. in time) who due to the hell setting which has a sun and full moon at the same time,is now in a partial wolf/feral state. She is part of Connor's team with Gwen who rescue civilians and provide protection in this hellish setting. -Gunn is now a vampire.Amy Acker leaked that this was the plan if Angel had continued on T.V. or DVD movies. For the most part,I really like the issue except for one thing, which I'll get to in a minute. I already liked the idea of the dragon working with Angel and it seems that poor Angel is having more misery heaped on him and still tied to W&H.His last stand accomplished nothing and actually made things worse.I guess it's always darkest before the dawn and hopefully by the time After The Fall is over,Angel will snatch some real victory. Whether L.A. is actually in a hell dimension or cut off from the rest of the world with hell brought to L.A.,hopfully will be more clear in upcoming issues.Personally I hope and think it's the former. I'm not a fan of bringing dead characters back at this point but the way Wes is brought back makes sense and something many speculated on.That his contract would extend to the afterlife like Lilah's did.Wonder if she'll be popping in at some point too.I'm still not a fan of bringing dead characters back and hope no more are brought back. For example,Cordy got the perfect send-off and would hate to see that un-done by bringing her back in some way.but Wes's return works for me in the way it was handled. I'm glad that the vampire Gunn idea that Amy Acker leaked last year is being carried over to this.Joss probably wishes she never said anything now I bet though.lol' I think this is much more interesting then having Gunn being fine except losing an eye as shown in Angel:Old Friends.I always felt that was a copy of Xander. So I really want to see where the vamp Gunn thing goes and who actually turned him. Not thrilled about the return of Nina at all.And given the set up I think Anne would of worked much better in this scenario with Connor and Gwen protecting civilians .Especially since Anne actually was in NFA while Nina wasn't(she was supposed to be on a plane in the episode before) and Anne's scene with Gunn gave a good setup for her doing something like this now.I guess we'll see where this goes though but the return of Nina did knock things down a notch for me and I'm not too enthused about it. Other then the return of Nina,I enjoyed the issue and will be looking forward to issue 2. The BCC exclusive Angel:After The Fall #3 cover. ![]() Over on his blog,Brian Lynch explains why Wes looks like his Buffy season 3/Angel season 1-2 self. Myspace.com Blogs - Happy Black Friday - brian lynch MySpace Blog I want to reveal a little something about ANGEL:AFTER THE FALL number 1. A lot of people are asking "hey how come Wesley is in his old suit and tie instead of sporting the kick ass stubbled leather jacket-y look?" Two reasons: 1. As hinted at in the pages of AFTER THE FALL 1. Wolfram & Hart is a fan of irony and torture. Angel was punished, Wesley was too. They're forcing him into kinda regressing into a way of being he long since left behind. He's moved on, he's not that person anymore, but damn that W & H, they know how to stick it to you. And 2. He's the last official representative of Wolfram & Hart, he has to look official. He's the face of the branch now. This is explained a little more as the series goes on, I just thought I would shed some light on it. As for why he's, you know, more ghostly than Lilah was after her return? We go into that as the series progresses. It's not a huge REVEAL, but Wesley has some theories. Brian The cover to Angel:After The Fall #4. Comics Continuum: IDW Publishing for February ANGEL: AFTER THE FALL #4 Written by Joss Whedon and Brian Lynch, art by Franco Urru, covers by Andrew Robinson and Urru. As the first chapter in this epic tale reaches its penultimate point, Angel issues a challenge to someoneóa lot of someones, actuallyóthat he can't possibly win. Meanwhile, Spike considers changing sides as this hellish new status quo presents some opportunities he can't pass up. And IDW promises a shock ending more explosive than even those of the first three issues. 32 pages, $3.99. Thanks. Angel:After The Fall #1 goes to a third printing. ANGEL: AFTER THE FALL #1 SELLS OUT, THIRD PRINTING COMING - NEWSARAMA ANGEL: AFTER THE FALL #1 SELLS OUT, THIRD PRINTING COMING Press Release When IDW Publishing announced it would debut the official continuation of the Angel TV show with series mastermind Joss Whedon co-writing the story, fans of the show and of IDW’s previous Angel comic books went into a fever of anticipation. But now that the issue has hit the stands, the fever has not broken: Angel: After the Fall #1 has become IDW’s highest-charting comic book release ever, selling out its initial print run before the issue even hit the stores. Presided over by Whedon, with a hand-picked creative team that includes scripter Brian Lynch and artist Franco Urro, the issue’s second printing (Diamond item code SEP07 8061), featuring an iconic photo of Angel himself, has nearly sold out as well, and a third printing is now on the way. Critical and fan response to the debut has offered a cascade of overwhelmingly positive reviews, along with mainstream coverage in New York Magazine and at TVGuide.com. “The Whedon-sanctioned return of Angel will be enough to bring them in, but there is more than enough going on here to bring them back,” wrote FractalMatter.com. Newsarama.com, meanwhile, noted that “it’s also written tightly enough that a newbie could jump in… though there’s of course a tremendous advantage associated with being familiar with the material.” At the comics review site ComicPants.com, reviewer Randy Lander asks: “Does Angel: After the Fall live up to the standards of five seasons of Angel? The answer, I’m happy to report, is yes.” The epic storyline, plotted by Whedon and Lynch, details the cataclysmic events that follow the stunning series finale of the show. Angel and company must now contend with being trapped in a Los Angeles that has quite literally gone to Hell; and as that saga unfolds, IDW will publish spin-off stories like the “First Night” tale currently slated for April, detailing exactly what happened in the moments after the last episode’s credits rolled—including the fates of some characters not seen in the finale. Angel: After the Fall #2 (Diamond item code OCT07 3581) will arrive in stores Dec. 19. Brian Lynch answers Angel:After The Fall questions. Myspace.com Blogs - Answered! - brian lynch MySpace Blog Tuesday, November 27, 2007 Answered! Okay, currently flying high over America on the way back to Los Angeles, what better time to answer questions about ANGEL:AFTER THE FALL. Warning: there is currently much turbulence going on so I may type gibberish in pure fear. Let's go! First batch: _______________________ 1) Will it be revealed who sired Gunn? Will it be important in any way? 2) There's a lot of confusion about whether LA was transported into a hell dimension or was simply made into a hellish place. Will this be clarified, if not can you clarify that? 3) Are the runes on the walls of Gunn's hideout the same kind the Lindsey used in season 5? 4) On a scale of 1 to 10, now much did you enjoy writing Kr'ph's lines? 5) Will Angel get some of his office furniture back from Burge? Answers: 1) Yes. It's important to Gunn, I would imagine. You always remember your sire. 2) It will be clarified. 3) That would be spoiling. Answers are coming in issue 2. 4) 'bout a 7? I will miss writing him, that's for sure. That said, he's not the lord I enjoy writing most. You'll see... 5) Probably not. It's all damaged and dented anyway. That was fun! Next batch: __________________________________ 1. Is there a definite, physical Big Bad? And if so, is it Gunn? (lol that might be spoilery, but on the chance that it's not, I figured I'd throw it out there) 2. I've heard that "First Night" has become a two-issue miniarc instead of a one-shot. Is that true, or not so much? 3. Can the dragon be named Ramon? Pretty please? He looks saucy enough to be named Ramon. 4. When (if) Spike and Betta George meet, will they recognize each other? If they do, will that canonize "Asylum?" (BTW, I already have the "Asylum" trade in the "canon section" of by Buffyverse shelf... and yes, that is dorky of me to have a "canon section" but we're all dorks here) 5. If Joss were to sanction an on-going Angel series (like the BtVS: Season Eight) would you, agree to sign on as the writer for the run of it, or would you call it a day after "After the Fall?" Answers: 1. Kinda spoilery. 2. Yes it is true. I wrote a lot of stories, too much for one issue. 3. If it makes you feel better you can call me Ramon. 4. Kinda spoilery. 5. I'm so knee-deep in this series that I can't think about what comes after. But I love writing it so far, I'll tell you that much. And thank you for the kind words after the questions. Very very nice of you. Next batch: ______________________ 1. Do you already have a general idea of where everything is going to end up? 2. And is there already a set number of issues in mind or is it more of a 'we'll keep maing them so long as people keep buying them' kind of thing? 1. Yessir, but it doesn't mean things won't change a bit along the way. 2. There is a rough number of issues in mind, absolutely. Aside from FIRST NIGHT, there will be 12 or so issues of AFTER THE FALL. Maybe one or two more. Maybe it all ends in issue 2. You never know, and that's half the fun. Next group: ________________________ 1 Do you have any plans to bring Cordelia, Fred, and Doyle back? 2 Also i heard that Illyriawas going to have an arc where her time shifting powers come back but she goes back into the future through a portal she accidentaly created with her powers. Something in the same vein of the Pylea arc only with Illyria. 1. Wow, that would be spoiler-esue to say. 2. Illyria's time-shifting powers are addressed, but I don't think she's gonna go into the future. She wouldn't like it anyway, Biff Tannen has this crazy Pleasure Palace and has taken control of Hill Valley. Next question: __________________________ One thing I'd like to know (and I hope this doesn't veer too close to the "you or Whedon" thing) is how much of what we've seen so far was planned for Season 6? Like, was L.A. always going to be in Hell when the season premiere aired in Fall 2004, or was that an idea that you guys tweaked for the comic? Was Gunn always supposed to be a vampire or was that specific to AFTER THE FALL? These probably aren't questions you're at liberty to answer, but I thought I'd take a shot. Hmmmmm. This is a bit "me or Whedon", sure, but I will say Gunn being turned was most definitely something they were thinking about back in the day. But did they have him TURN INTO A VAMPIRE AND KNOCK OUT A TELEPATHIC FISH? I don't think they did. Advantage: adorable Lynch. Next questions: ____________________________ Hi Brian! Ok for me the POV swiltched from Angel to Gunn in the last panels, so the final ones where what Gunn was thinking. Is that true? That he has retained some of his human feelings post turning? Answer: It was all Angel's POV. The captions were supposed to be a bit ironic, sure, as Angel was saying they haven't changed him while over a close friend they most definitely have, but it was all Angel's narration. Next batch: _____________________ 1) Was Gunn as a vampire always part of how you envisioned ATF? I know that story arc was planned for S6 before the cancellation. So, if you hadn't envisioned him as a vamp, what sort of route might you have taken him down? I'm all for Gunn as a vamp btw. I'll be honest... I was shocked that Gunn ended up being one of the most intriguing parts of Ish 1 for me, cos' despite liking him on the show, he was never my favorite character. Oh, and with the legal brain upgrade he's totally going to be on par with Angelus. 2) Have you gone for a "shock ending" angle for every issue? I imagine Issue 5 might not have one with it being the end of an arc. 3) If ATF had opening credits like the series, what characters would you put on them? Personally, I'm guessing Angel, Spike, Connor, Wes, Gunn and Illyria. Possibly Gwen? 4) How jealous are you that Burge has that coffee table and you don't. Cos' personally I'm green with envy. Answers: 1. Gunn as a vamp was brought up early on, so no other paths were really considered. 2. Not a shock ending, but kind of a cliffhanger, I guess. Five isn't the end of an arc, it just wraps a few things up, while opening up a whole other hellish can of demon worms. 3. That's kinda spoilery too, but yeah, I would say Gwen would be added. 4. He has a desk. OH MAN HE STOLE THE COFFEE TABLE TOO? Mean ole Burge. Next batch: ____________________________ Q1 Is Angel still juiced or contained with Hamiltons blood? Q2 Is there any significance to the red scar under Gunn's eye? Q3 Isn't Gunn bound to a contract with Wolfram + Hart, or was his brain upgrades the crux of it? Answers: 1. Nah. 2. He took a nasty, nasty hit to the eye moments before getting turned. 3. Wolfram & Hart has a lot of people (etc.) under contract. Who they choose to keep "on staff" is up to them. Right now they are keeping the Los Angeles branch a bit understaffed. Wow, turbulence just got bad. Wolfram & Hart isn't happy with me for discussing their internal business. Moving on! _____________________________ Also, I've been wondering, seeing as both season 5 and now the first issue of After the Fall (with Gwen and Nina) seems to make a point out of bringing back old minor characters/tying up old loose plotpoints, what are the odds of getting to know whatever happened with phased-out-characters like Kate Lockley, David Nabbit or even Groo? I realize they probably would serve no story-function and thus won't be brought back, but loose ends bug me, so I can't not ask... Oh, and, will we get to know why Nina is in LA with the rest of them? Did she not leave when Angel asked her to, or did she just dawdle too much and not get out in time? (I'd also ask if we get to know why Gwen is in L.A. again all of a sudden and why the two of them hangs out with Connor instead of Angel, but I'm assuming that'll all be answered in due time by the comics themselves anyway...)Answers: Characters will pop up from time to time. You might see some favorites. Keep an eye out. I would assume she didn't get out of LA in time. As for Gwen, we'll learn a little more about what she was up to in LA before the fall in FIRST NIGHT. Next batch: ________________________ 1)Is L.A. actually in a Hell Dimension or has Hell been brought to L.A. and a barrier is cutting it off from the rest of the world? 2)Will it be explained how the real world reacts to a entire city missing or blocked from the rest of the world with a hellish landscape? You would think Buffy, the slayers and the military would notice a missing major city or a major city you can't get in with hell overflowing inside for example. 3)On a scale of 1 to 5 with 5 being big and 1 being small, how big a threat will Gunn be? 4)Why did you bring Nina back and does the return of Nina mean we have to deal with Nina/Angel hooking back up and more of that pairing which wasn't well liked and pretty much closed in 'Power Play'? 5)Why did you bring Gwen back and will she have an encounter with vampire Gunn? 6)Have you heard from any of the other writers of the shows or actors from Angel and their reaction to After The Fall? 7)Are you or Joss upset Amy Acker revealed the vampire Gunn news back in 2006?Do you think that took away any impact to the last page of issue 1 since it was already something that fans knew was possibly in the cards? 8)Does After The Fall take place at the same time as Buffy Season 8 or does it take place before the start of season 8? 9)Do you know the exact date in December when issue 2 comes out yet? Answers: 1. Why would you want me to answer this on a blog, isn't it more fun to read it in the comic? Because you will. Oh you will. Patience, my friends. 2. Gah, just wait. 3. To me? A zero, he's totally fictional. I'm willing to bet the guy who plays Gunn, however, could kick my ass. Lookin' good, Mr. Richards! 4. Translation of your question: I personally don't like Nina. My response: skip her pages. It's not NINA:AFTER THE FALL, but she is a small part of it. I am sorry for any discomfort this causes. I'm willing to be you will like her the more you see her in the comic. 5. Gwen is a great character for comics, and was underused on the show. As for the rest of this question, that would be telling. 6. Yes, one person who played a part on the show and he or she thought Franco's drawings of him or her were awesome. No wait, actually two! Yes. 7. This is a great question, and Amy Acker can do whatever she wants because she's the best, but yes, I wish that plot point wasn't announced before, absolutely. We should have had Franco draw Amy Acker popping into frame and saying "I told you!" But, again, it's all well and good, how was she supposed to know the show would live on in comic form? No biggie. 8. I can't read that last question, your handwriting is bad. 9. Not yet, I will get that info for you. Neeeeext! ____________________ Will the Senior Partners still only be something that is spoken of, or will the play a more direct role now that a budget isn't an issue? Answer: We'll see, my friend, we'll see! Next up: _________________ Is there a possibility of an Angel/Buffy crossover. I know the two comics are owned by different companies, but I know a lot of the fans would love to see them cross paths again. I understand that the two storylines grow on their own, but as a dorky fan, I want to see the characters meet and talk about what has happened. There's so much material for heavy drama and butt-kicking :-) Answer: That's something I would love to read. In a world where Freddy and Jason and Ash can cross company lines, I think a Dark Horse/IDW presentation of BUFFY/ANGEL would rock the heavens. But there is no plan as far as I know. Again, though, I would love to read it. Next up: _________________ My question is about the advertising for the comics, which I know, as a writer, you do not have control over. In almost every review and/or advertisement for the series thus far, Spike fans have been inundated with the "Is Spike going ev0l!?" tagline. We had to put up with that through almost four years of the show, and it got old after the first few times. It just was played up too much, mostly by the advertising and not the actual writing on the show. Do you sometimes feel like advertising is deliberately misleading to get better sales for the books? Here's an example from the issue 4 ad: "Meanwhile, Spike considers changing sides as this hellish new status quo presents some opportunities he can't pass up." As a reader, I can take that to mean many things and can think up many possibilites, but the advertising would have me believe that once again the old "Spike could go evil so you better buy this book/watch this show to find out!" routine is once again in play. Any thoughts (without spoilers of course)? Answer, kinda: I'm the writer of the book. Ask me writer-y questions. Oh, though I did write the PREVIEWS text for issue 5, so if you have a problem with that, let me know. But on that note, why does a mention of Spike changing sides mean he's going to be evil? There are more sides than "good" and "evil". Not everyone is a white hat or a black hat, don't fret, I'm willing to bet sometime soon you're gonna be like "ooooh, I as worried for nothing." "Changing sides". They COULD be talking about Spike exploring his sexuality. They're not, but they could be. Next! ____________________ 1) What response, if any, has the rest of the country and the world had to LA's sudden entry into Hell (or vice versa)? How about Buffy's army of Slayers? Seems like just the type of task to which they'd be well-suited. 2) Does Connor have his new "parents" holed up in the safehouse as well? 3) Is this the "apocalypse" in which Angel was always supposed to play a key role, or is this just part of Wolfram and Hart's set up for that apocalypse? 4) Does this new HelL.A. include perpetual night? That would seem to give Angel, Spike, and now Gunn (poor guy) some increased mobility... 5) I guess this counts as a spoiler question, but does Gunn have a soul? I'm guessing he was sired by either Angel or Spike, which would (I think) be the first time an ensouled vamp has sired someone (though I'm vaguely remembering something from an early Angel season when this may have happened). Does a soul come along with that? 6) So the Wesley we're seeing is the real Wesley, correct? Is he being held between life and death in order to fill this role as the firm's representative? This is not just something else taking his form, right? 6) How expensive is gas in L.A. now?? These are all story questions that should be answered in the comic, not a myspace blog, so I'm gonna maintain radio silence on these, save for Gas being 6 dollars and 66 cents now, because that's ironic. I also deleted the few other dudes' questions, because the answers would prove too spoilery. But stay tuned, there is some good stuff on the way that addresses some of your concerns/questions. Next up! ______________________ 1: What exactly does the no-sun-no-moon thing do to a werewolf? Does it just simply put them in heat, or is it more complicated than that? (Lame and probably irrelevant question, but whatever. It's all I could think of in the first issue that was unclear without seeming like a spoilery topic.) 2: Do you have the theme from "The Greatest American Hero" on a constant loop in your head? I would imagine that's the price you'd have to pay for getting such an awesome gig. That or a soul. 1. Great question. Angel actually discusses the sun/moon effects on all sorts of demons in issue three, but I would say it puts them in a state hovering between human and werewolf, so she's human but stronger, sharper, and more primal. 2. Even better question! I love that song. "Look at what's happened to meeeeeee, I can't believe it myself…" _____________ Another thing i have to ask is could you ask Joss what was planned for season 6 if it had not got cancelled? I know bits and pieces like the whole Gunn going vamp thing but what would S6 have focused on. Im almost certian that it wasnt going to hell. Sigh. ___________________ I was wondering Mr. Brain, will Connor and Spike ever bond ? And if so will they bug Angel to death ? And for an online friend of mine, are you a Dragonriders of Pern fan ? Because that Dragon with Angel, really wants to make me call N'gel. And I didn't make that up, though an online lady in England did. Hi Eli. Answers: Spike and Connor scenes would be fun, no? And I would imagine that would be ABSOLUTELY FINE with Angel. Sarcasm reads on the internet, yes? I am not aware of the Dragonriders, no. But it sounds something or other! ____________________ I don't have the comic in front of me, but I seem to recall that Wesley mentioned he's the last representative of Wolfram & Hart. On the TV show, Lilah Morgan and Holland Manners were called from beyond the grave to perform tasks, I'm assuming this is the same with Wesley. So why is he the only one that Wolfram & Hart can call upon now. Also, why does Wesley look like Season 1 Wesley. I don't just mean the suit, but also the hair-style and the glasses, which he hadn't worn regularly since Season 3. Also, don't know if this is a spoiler or not, but how was he able to phase when teh demon went to punch him? In Season Four finale, Angel was able to choke Lilah Morgan, when she was under the same circumstances as Wesley is here. Answers: He's not the only one they CAN call upon. He seems to be the one that they WANT to call upon. And his look is punishment. He's moved on, but they won't let him. Also, he's the last official representative of Wolfram & Hart, he has to look the part. He ain't corporal, duder. As for why THAT is, stay tuned. _________________ That was fun, thanks everyone! And to everyone who had questions deleted or not answered, it's only because you're gonna read about them in the book. Off to go use the three foot by three foot potty. Wish me luck! Chris Ryall confirmed in the comment section of the blog that Angel:After The Fall #2 comes out December 19. Panels from issue 2 posted by Chris Ryall over at the IDW site. Since the word on Angel: After the Fall #1 has been so great, I thought I'd be nice and post a couple new pages from Franco. I really want to post the cover to issue 5, too, since it's so great, but I need to wait until you read issue 2 (out December 19!) so I don't spoil anything. So for now, enjoy. And thanks! ![]() ![]() There is also a article about T.V. shows getting canon continuations in comics and how Joss led the pack with season 8.Angel:After The Fall is also mentioned. Here is the Angel and Buffy parts. TV continues uninterrupted in comic books - TV Squad TV continues uninterrupted in comic books Posted Nov 29th 2007 1:06PM by Jason Hughes Filed under: OpEd, TCA Press Tour, TV Squad Lists, WGA Strike What are you going to do? The Office, How I Met Your Mother, and even new shows like Pushing Daisies and Chuck are either out of fresh episodes or quickly running out. Well, you don't need to spend the "strike season" curled up in the corner of your bedroom crying through a pile of TV Guides, remembering the good old days when you didn't already know what was going to happen this week on House. Television is alive and well, and even growing ... just somewhere else. Want to know what happened to Jack Bauer before Season One of 24? How about Buffy and the Scooby Gang after the series finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer? More and more shows are expanding their horizons by telling prequels, sequels and even in-between-quels in comic books, or graphic novels. Comics and television have been joined at the hip almost as long as television has been around. When the Lone Ranger rode off into the sunset on the airwaves, new adventures were always waiting at your local newsstand. Everything from The Beverly Hillbillies to Gunsmoke was in comics, too. While there aren't as many TV comics today as there were then, something even more existing is happening. More and more Hollywood heavy hitters are moonlighting in the comics industry, most notably Joss Whedon (Buffy, Angel, Firefly/Serenity) and J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5, Jeremiah). Even when Babylon 5 was still on the air, Straczynski used comic books to tell what is considered 'canonical' side stories to his epic. But it was Whedon who, earlier this year, set the bar far higher by officially launching 'Season Eight' of his popular Buffy the Vampire Slayer series as a comic book, penning the first "episode" himself. Nobody's really been sure what to make of this new project; we here at TV Squad even polled you, our readers, to see if you wanted us to continue reviewing this strange hybrid of television show and comic book. I mean, it is the official continuation of Buffy's story, but is it TV? Does it belong here? The lines have been blurred, and there's more coming out every day. With a limitless special effects budget in comics, and much lower costs associated, it's no wonder more and more creators are looking at Whedon's model and considering the possibilities. Let's hit some highlights: Official Continuations (New Seasons) Angel Following on the heels of the extremely successful launch of Buffy's Eighth Season in comic book format, the "official" continuation of Angel is coming soon. While he's not able to call the series Angel: Season Six, for legal reasons, that's what this is. Unfortunately, Dark Horse Comics let the Angel license go to a different publisher, so there won't be any inter-series crossovers anytime soon. Editor Scott Allie admits in the letters page of the latest Buffy comic that this was a mistake and apologizes. Hopefully, something can be worked out so Buffy and Angel can have a steamy reunion scene. Buffy the Vampire Slayer In some ways, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season Eight, has set a new template that more shows may follow. Whedon has already indicated he's going to be bringing back new Firefly adventures, under its better known film name, Serenity. Whedon has already shown how far he can push things without an effects budget, with a giant Dawn, massive destruction and enough crazy magic that it would cost millions per episode to try and produce this vision of Buffy and the legion of Slayers. A review of issue 1. Some issues with 'Angel' | Philadelphia Daily News | 12/03/2007 Posted on Mon, Dec. 3, 2007 Some issues with 'Angel' Dark art work, hard-to-follow storyline make for problems By JEROME MAIDA For the Daily News With the overwhelming success of Dark Horse's "Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season Eight," IDW was expecting big things with "Angel: After The Fall," a series set to chronicle the never-produced sixth season of the "Angel" TV show. With creator Joss Whedon involved and announcing the series as "canon" in his Angel/Buffyverse, fans were looking forward to big things as well. That "Angel: After the Fall" No. 1 will now enjoy a third printing a scant two weeks after its first shows the pent-up demand fans have had for this tale to be told. However, Comics Guy has a feeling many will be disappointed. First, while "Angel" always had a darker tone than "Buffy," the art by Franco Urru is so dark it's sometimes hard to read the issue. Add in that many characters - one in particular who will come as a shock - appear without any explanation and the book is likely to be difficult for long-time Angel fans to follow and practically guaranteed to frustrate new readers. I had no idea what was going on at times. If Whedon wrote this himself, as he did the first "Buffy Season Eight" arc, the book may have been more fun and readable. But though he had imput on the plot, the series is written by Brian Lynch. Though Lynch is talented - and Whedon obviously did not write all the TV scripts for "Angel" - it says something when he is willing to write the first arc of Buffy's continuing adventures himself but only co-plot further Angel stories. It is quite possible that all will be revealed and I will end up as enthusiastic about this title as I am about "BTVSS8." Also, Whedon's fans are so rabid they will likely stay on for the duration. I simply expected more from a first issue of this magnitude. Finally Angel:After The Fall #1 getting a third printing press release from IDW. IDW Publishing Angel: After the Fall Rises to the Top for IDW The debut issue of the Joss Whedon-led series sells out its first printing, third printing on the way San Diego, CA (November 28, 2007)—When IDW Publishing announced that they would be publishing the official continuation of the Angel television series, the news was met with fevered anticipation by the faithful fans of the TV show and the previous comic books. And the first issue of this series, Angel: After the Fall #1, has delivered on that premise, instantly becoming IDW’s highest-charting comic book release ever. The first issue, presided over by Angel co-creator Joss Whedon, scripted by Brian Lynch and illustrated by Franco Urru, sold out of its initial printing before the comic ever hit stores, and its second printing (Diamond item code SEP07 8061), which features an iconic photo image of Angel, is nearly sold out as well. A third printing of the issue is on its way, too. Critical and fan response to the debut issue matched the initial pre-orders for the book, with an overwhelming array of positive reviews. While FractalMatter.com stated that “The Whedon-sanctioned return of Angel will be enough to bring them in, but there is more than enough going on here to bring them back,” Newsarama.com also pointed out that “it’s also written tightly enough that a newbie could jump in… though there’s of course a tremendous advantage associated with being familiar with the material.” The issue also received coverage on TVGuide.com, in New York Magazine, and at comics review site ComicPants.com, where reviewer Randy Lander asks “The question then becomes, “Does Angel: After the Fall live up to the standards of five seasons of Angel? The answer, I’m happy to report, is yes.”. The epic series itself, as plotted by Whedon and Lynch, will detail what happened “after the Fall,” as Angel and company must deal with being trapped in a Hellish Los Angeles; along the way, there will also be spin-offs like the April-bound “First Night” storyline detailing exactly what happened at the exact end of the TV series and how it affected many of the show’s popular characters, even some not seen on-camera in that final episode. Angel: After the Fall #2 (item code OCT07 3581) will be in stores on December 19, 2007. Last edited by Berengaria : 12-29-2007 at 07:45 PM.

| Wow, thanks for all the info! I just got the first comic today. For the most part, I loved it; I've missed the old Angel gang. A couple notes: - I loved seeing Gwen again. I've always wished that she'd showed up again on the show after Players. - I'm really interested to see where they take Gunn. He's one of my favorite characters, so it kind of sucks that he's (presumably?) evil, but I'm glad that he's still around and getting a shiny new storyline. - I hope Lilah pops up at some point too - she's another of my faves, and I missed her in season five. Overall, I thought it was a great start to the season. Anyone know the release date for issue 2? I'm sure it says somewhere in issue 1, but I can't seem to find it. ETA: Never mind; found the release date! __________________ well i remember, i remember, don't worry Last edited by ~*Echo*~ : 12-12-2007 at 02:53 PM. | |||
