disregarding her becoming more entitled in the later seasons I feel like Rory fit more into that high society world than Lorelai ever did and in 6x08 Emily is essentially trying to turn Rory into her

I feel that Rory is more comfortable in Emily's world than Lorelai but I feel like she takes more of an interest mostly to make her grandparents happy and not hurt their feelings.

Rory and Dean never excited me in any way, but this was funny.

I can see both of Rory's parents in her as well as both her grandparents. I think Rory has always been a bridge between Lorelai and Emily. She kind of puts herself there to settle conflict but also Rory gave Lorelai the strength to leave but also the reason to return more regularly.

Rory is her own person, She isn't this beautiful free spirit that Lorelai is in that she is more reserved and grounded. She's much more a natural people pleaser (in the best way in that she wants people happy not that she wants to gain something from the person). She's also doesn't instinctually need to feel independent. She relies on the people in her life and not really reluctantly. She also relies on list and plans and structure much more so than Lorelai. She does do impulsive things though but it's more about stress or emotion than a personality trait. None of the Gilmores learned how to cope with stress and emotions healthy.

That's true. I agree that she forms a bridge between the generations.

This is beautifully said. I agree with every word.

I'm either gonna re-watch later tonight or tomorrow

so I just finished re-watching the pilot eating appropriate junk food a la Gilmore Girls style aka pizza and red vines

when Dean says he's been watching Rory read every day and he says not in a creepy way though I snorted

I think I re-watched the pilot right after I finished watching the show for the 1st time or recently afterwards just to get the full parallel effect with the final diner scenes

it's hard to believe that in 2 years it will have been 20 years since this show premiered

Happy 18th anniversary to our show!

I also really love the music in the pilot

just amazing

it really introduces you to what the music is going to be like on the show

the scene where Richard falls asleep at the dinner table

I love how the scene where Richard hands Rory the newspaper to read is included in the opening credits

totally relate to the scene where Rory says I love being a private school girl cause I used to go to a Catholic K-8 private school from K-5th grade myself and I had to wear a uniform with a sweater and the same-colored plaid skirt (the whole thing)

it was nice not having to decide what to wear every day although we did have free dress days

but I'm different from Rory cause I transferred to a public school when I started middle school

I really enjoyed watching this again, and was reminded what a great pilot it is.

It sets up the character's personalities and the complex relationships beautifully. The strained relationship between Lorelai and her parents is explained nicely as is the situation with Rory's father.

Rory is also interesting in this. I feel like we get a taste of both her positives and negatives all in one episode. We see how important books and her education is to her, but one conversation with a boy she thinks might like her and she contemplates giving up Chilton, becomes petulant and is really rude to her mother. Very telling.

Also that magical Stars Hollow atmosphere was evident right from the beginning.

Random thoughts -
Is that harp player the actress now in Maisel?
Dean acting all bookish and intelligent is very bizarre.
Another full circle hint when Lorelai yells at Rory 'oh my God you're me' or something like that.
The diner looked weird.
Loved the first scene using the song There She Goes.

Fave quotes
Mrs Kim 'boys don't like funny girls'

Rory 'have you done something ****ty?"
Lorelai 'I'm not that happy' .

I was hooked on this show from the very first moment There She Goes started playing. Just one of the best TV show openings ever.

When I watched it for the 1st time a year ago I actually thought Lorelai worked there. I know I'm weird.

Yes that's Alex Bornstein. She played Drella the harpist and later on Miss Celine.

I noticed in pilot that Lorelai tells the guy at the diner that Rory is 16. She wasn't sixteen until a few weeks later when she had her birthday. I would have thought she would have told the guy she was 15. I think the writers had Rory driving by herself, so maybe that was the reason they changed their minds. They probably thought they could keep her in school longer by being a sophomore than turning 17 and being a junior
