It's actually tricky, because the idea is horrible. The book will alienate Rory and Lorelai and although Lorelai will not be as direct as Emily, their relationship will eventually become similar to Emily/Lorelai relationship.

But why does Rory accept the idea? It's strange and I don't understand that. Lorelai or Emily never just accepted someone else's ideas and Rory usually had pro and con lists too. But she just listens to Jess.

Is that because Rory never had a father and she is looking for a guidance?

I was against cause it's something I saw on two other shows. However I never really thought of it as weakness her listening to jess

I've never realised that before. It really doesn't make sense. She's spent her life with women who never just blindly accept someone else's ideas, and not just Lorelai and Emily, but Paris, too, and Lane who spent her entire teen years rebelling against her mother's ideas. It's strange that Rory would randomly accept anyone's ideas without giving it serious thought.

The season 3 commentary over in the season 3 thread is reminding me of all the Jess drama I couldn’t stand watching and I will never see the draw to a character like that. I get it to a point but I would’ve much preferred seeing him seek help to better himself through therapy or something similar instead of seeing him spiral and take Rory with him. His so-called redemption happened offscreen so I never fully trusted him even in the revival.

Jess could have potential if he had gotten help but he let his bitterness consume him. I hate the term manspaining because my job is explaining stuff to kids and to me it's just a weird word but I agree that I didn't like asp given jess this authority like he's this expert

I hate the stigma with therapy. I wish TV programs would show the benefits to someone asking for help and realizing they need it.

I think people's perspectives change when you filter a character’s behavior through a modern lens. When I first watched GG I really liked Jess; or at least I loved their bond over literature but looking back on his behavior I am made to feel more and more uncomfortable.

It also depends when you watch it. I was I guess a lit when I first watched but I blame my friends and I was a teen but then Logan came and I was rewatching s3 and I saw all the issues with rj

There’s not one part of me that can excuse his behavior. I can hardly stomach it when I go back and watch episodes with Jess. I don’t think ASP writes male characters very well. Even in Maisel the men are incredibly problematic which may be her point considering the times the story is set in.

I haven't watched maisel although I have been hearing good things about the dude who was on monk. I do agree she does have an excuse their. I think she does have problems giving guys their own success outside of the relationship. Logan had his good success under a different show runner but when she did come back it was back to square one. Plus with the exception of Rachel and possibly Lindsey no guys have really had like able other interest. Nicole and sherry started out okay but they were made to look bad later on
