all of these parallels make me very emotional in different ways

one thing I will give the writers credit for is that they truly know how to write a heartbreaking tragic bittersweet couple well

These four phone conversations are the only ones that are shown between Rory and Jess throughout the duration of the show, and I think it’s interesting how each one represents a different phase in their relationship, and how together, they capture that relationship in its entirety- from the thrilling beginning to the bitter end.

First we have the phone call that truly marks the beginning for them. They’d met before, and had brief exchanges, but not until the Bid-A-Basket festival did Rory and Jess really begin to know each other. There they sit, on their respective beds, as he’s holding her bracelet and teasing that she’s torturing him with her book recommendation. This is the episode that Rory finally realizes Jess isn’t just a frustrating but intriguing punk - and that deep down, he has a really good side to him.

Next we have a conversation that happens during their relationship post-car crash. Jess is in New York, but calls her, out of the blue, for really no reason at all. Their relationship is at a turning point - Rory knows now that she’s attracted to Jess (as she runs up and kisses him in the next episode) but she’s not quite ready to admit it to herself (or to Dean) yet.

Up next we have Rory and Jess in the prime of their relationship - things are going as good as they can be (what with the bizarre Dean situation and Jess’ emotional baggage). The conversation starts out a bit accusatory but quickly turns pleasant, and the scene fades out with them still chatting.

Lastly, we have the most heartbreaking call of all. This is a rather one-sided conversation, because although Jess initiates the call, he doesn’t say anything for the entire duration. Rory’s breaking up with him because of his choice to not talk to her about what was happening in his life, and then to just run off to California without warning. It ends with a declaration of love from Rory’s end - one that Jess doesn’t return for nearly a year - and as the scene closes we see Jess set down the pay phone, head hung, and walk out onto the California beach.
