Former 'Gilmore Girls' Actress Currently Filming 'Flash of Genius'

August 7, 2007

The end of the Gilmore Girls does not necessarily spell the end of Lauren Graham's career. She recently starred in the comedy, Evan Almighty, with Steve Carell (The Office) and is now busy working on another big screen project, Flash of Genius.

The drama, which marks the directorial debut of producer Marc Abraham, is about the life of Robert Kearns (Greg Kinnear), the inventor of the windshield wiper. Kearns spent most of his life fighting with Detroit automakers, whom he charged with stealing his invention. His fixation with legal retribution suffocated his relationship with wife Phyllis (Lauren Graham) and put a strain on their children. He eventually got a multi-million dollar settlement. Two years ago, he passed away.

Of the film, the former Gilmore Girls actress said, “It is a small, beautiful story of this one man taking on these big companies.”

The film is based on an article penned by New York-based writer John Seabrook. The script was written by Philip Railsback, Scott Frank and Abraham. The production team includes Spyglass partners Roger Birnbaum and Gary Barber, Michael Lieber, Jon Glickman, J. Miles Dale, Eric Newman and Tom Bliss.

"I bought the rights eight years ago and always hoped to direct it," Abraham told Variety. "This is a David vs. Goliath story, but I liked the fact that what Kearns fought for was almost whimsical and [it shows] the high cost someone can pay for refusing to compromise their dignity."

Production for Flash of Genius began last month in Toronto. Although Lauren Graham, who played Lorelai on Gilmore Girls, is excited to be working on the film, she did express some sadness over having to play another “wife” role in a movie.

“I'm just playing people's wives really,” Graham said, fresh from playing Carell's on-screen spouse in Evan Almighty. “I'm just doing the world tour. The Wife World Tour.”

One of the advantages of my annual July jaunt to Hollywood is that I get to hear stuff straight from the horse’s mouth.

That was the case with Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino.

Sherman-Palladino was on a panel for her new Fox series The Return of Jezebel James, but the TV critics in the ballroom first wanted to know about her last show — a show she abandoned in its final year over a contract dispute with The CW.

We all knew that Gilmore Girls was her special baby, that she’d poured her heart and soul into it. But, frankly, the series had run its course after seven seasons. This time last year I wrote that although stars Lauren Graham and Alexis Bledel said they were keeping their minds open, all signs pointed to the final season. I was right.

Sherman-Palladino is a colorful (some would say eccentric ) sort. She wore her trademark white Mad Hatter chapeau with butterfly pins, black lace jacket and bodice over a short black skirt. Her jet-black bangs fell below her eyebrows. She wore white go-go boots.

Husband / partner Daniel Palladino sat quietly by her side. He sported tan slacks and a conservatively striped yellow dress shirt with open collar.

That, and a slightly bemused look of perpetual chagrin.

We asked Sherman-Palladino if she steeled herself to watch her show’s final episode.

Before the question was completely out, Sherman-Palladino started singing the show’s theme song, “Where You Lead.”

“Here’s the deal,” the loquacious Sherman-Palladino said, leaning forward and re-crossing her go-go boots. “I think I just got very drunk that night and sat in the corner, and [Daniel ] read in a corner, and it was very quiet. Then we went to bed.

“ You know, I couldn’t watch it because it wasn’t going to be my ending. It wasn’t going to be what I have had in my head forever, and I was going to do something crazy — homicidal, suicidal, something with an ‘idal’ in it.

“ And I just figured, you know, ‘Go with God.’ I love all those people. I love that cast. You know, Lauren’s my pal. We’ve talked about maybe sometimes, you know, in the future doing a little song and dance together again, wrapping it up. I rule nothing out.”

For several years Sherman-Palladino had teased critics that she had Lorelai’s perfect last line all ready when the time came. It would be one of TV’s greatest last lines. Maybe now Sherman-Palladino would let us in on her long-held secret.

“It was, ‘You’re adopted, ’” she quipped as the room roared with laughter. “She’s in the shower, and she says, ‘ By the way, Rory, you’re adopted.’

Daniel quickly added, “ That’s not it. Let’s be clear.”

“It will be like ‘Rosebud,’ Amy noted.

“ Yeah, ‘Rosebud, ’” Daniel said.

Don’t feel too bad for the actors from Gilmore Girls, they’ll rebound just fine.

Melissa McCarthy (Sookie ) is co-starring in ABC’s Samantha Who ? Scott Patterson (Luke ) is the dad on The CW’s Aliens in America and Edward Herrmann (Richard Gilmore ) has a guest arc lined up on Grey’s Anatomy. MORE HORSES, MORE MOUTHS

The annual summer press tour is such a concentration of TV stars and network bigwigs that it quickly becomes surreal. You just write it all down and sort it out later. Here are a few more quotes gleaned along the way. “No.” — Shonda Rhimes, creator of Grey’s Anatomy, when asked if her series veered off course at the end of last season. “I lost 20 pounds in my divorce, because that’s what a soul weighs.” — Christopher Titus, star of ABC’s Big Shots. “You know, no one’s really ever fired in Hollywood, are they ? And no show is ever really canceled.” — Fired (or not ) former NBC Entertainment President Kevin Reilly, who quickly landed the same job at Fox. “Because I’m not a dumb blonde. When I would leave the set, she stayed there and I left.” — Christina Applegate on how she avoided being typecast as Married... With Children’s Kelly Bundy.

“I was in bed at about 3 in the afternoon, reading it like a teenager and having tiny screams of joy.” — Kate Walsh on reading the Grey’s Anatomy script where her character gets spun off to Private Practice.

“This gives me an opportunity to focus on acting because I don’t think that Mia Mason is going to be doing any kung fu anytime in the near future.” — Action star Lucy Liu (Kill Bill, Charlie’s Angels ) on her character in ABC’s Cashmere Mafia.

“It’s nice to be able to step up and take a little bow, but now I have to get the damn dress.” Conchata Ferrell of Two and a Half Men on being nominated for an Emmy. “We spend so much time stuck [on the set ] together that to plan something away from here would be sort of redundant. It’s nothing personal.” — Charlie Sheen on why he and co-star Jon Cryer don’t chum around together. “It’s like ‘ Yeah. Yeah. Bye. See ya.’ Pretty much.” — Cryer agreeing. “I’m so cool.” — Dania Ramirez, new Heroes cast member, when asked what her power will be. “It’s sort of like sprinkling bread crumbs. Actors will flock to stunning pieces of writing.” — British actor Hugh Laurie, star of House, on the influx of British actors on American TV this fall. “I read the books.”

“No, you don’t.”

“Yes, I do.”

“No, you don’t.”

“I do, too. I read the books.”

“Oh, yeah, that’s right, you read the books all the time.”

“I give you all the insight into all the books.”

Keiko Agena (Lane on Gilmore Girls) is currently filming a new movie called "Major Movie Star."

"Major Movie Star" is a comedy directed by Steve Miner, and stars Jessica Simpson, Olesya Rulin, Vivica A. Fox, and Steve Guttenberg. Keiko Agena will play "Lee", a reservist alongside Jessica Simpson, in the movie.

When fluffy, bubble gum movie star Megan Parker suddenly finds herself broke and humiliated in the public eye, she wanders from the wreckage of a car accident and witlessly enlists in the U.S. Army hoping in vain that it will change her life.

Thanks Denise,

Good to hear those after work are getting it, given time we'll probably hear about most of the regulars on the show. I have no doubt those on the show looking for work after Gilmore will find it!

Thanks.

I liked the preview. It was funny. Not much Scott in it though. But I think I'll give the shoe a chance!
