According to the TV Academy, limited series do "not have an ongoing storyline and/or main characters in subsequent seasons." Another season of “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” is looking less likely, now that we’ve learned which Emmy category the show will compete in this year. According to the Television Academy, the producers behind “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” petitioned to face off in the limited series categories, and the Academy approved its eligibility there. This won't stop more. You can watch a year in the life without having to watch the WB/CW series and even with the pregnancy ending, there doesn't have to be more. It has its own beginning and ending. That is what makes this a mini-series instead of an on-going series. It's self-contained in its own way. Limit series is just what they call mini-series these days.
