Roush on Gilmore Girls and Veronica Mars

Question: Do you think the way the CW (mis)handled the Gilmore Girls and
Veronica Mars series finales (in that no one knew they were going to be series finales until too late) will cause the people behind top-quality shows to shy away from that network? Do you think anyone with the next big hit or cult phenom would go to a network that would put the Pussycat Dolls and Farmer Takes a Wife over their product? Or that would string them along until it was too late to end the show in the way they envisioned?— Jackie

Matt Roush: It's naive to think a producer would ever "shy away" from any network that might potentially buy what they're selling. If someone has a project that fits the CW brand, they're not going to hesitate because of the way a handful of shows ended, especially not after Gilmore Girls' triumphant seven-season run and Veronica's miraculous three-year run (imagine any other network giving it that long a leash). When people are trying to get a show on the air, they're thinking about the beginning, not about the end, which is rarely pretty, regardless of the network. And it's a fact of life that reality shows are a complement to every network's schedule. Frankly, it's amazing that it took the CW of all networks (given its demographics) so long to get busy with this genre.

About Matt Czuchry, from Kristin - E!Online:

Karen in the Netherlands: There's a rumor floating around that Matt Czuchry is doing a guest appearance on the CW's new drama Gossip Girl. Do you know if there's any truth to this?
Afraid we're going to have to disappoint you on this one. According to his reps, "There have been no formal discussions for Matt to join Gossip Girl in any capacity." That said, you're a casting genius, and Logan Huntzberger would be a perfect addition to that show, which is wall-to-wall debauched, overindulged teens.

Another positive mention for AiA (though still without SP) HERE:

The fall TV season: taking a first look
By Gail Pennington

I spent much of the holiday weekend, if you can call it that, watching the networks’ fall pilots. I’m not allowed to officially “review” them at this point, because many of them are still rough and others seem likely to be completely reshot. But so far, my impression is: not so bad; not great. I liked the CW’s “Aliens in America” (a half-hour comedy, no laugh track and very charming) quite a bit, ....

I'm glad there is no laugh track. I don't need help to decide if something is funny or not. Not that I will watch that show.

It would do MC well to get away from the teen roles and the CW.

So SP ends up on a show with no laugh track (yet) and ASP lost the laugh-track battle for her show. Color me amused.

Totally agree. Matt seemed to be one of the nicer and more honest of GG's lead actors; I'd love to see him do better than the CW. But isn't this the off-season for TV casting? SP had a studio option and AiA apparently wanted to recast its dad role. How often do those fates combine?

Come to that, I'd like to see Scott do better than the CW, too.

So sitcoms work with a laugh track/studio audience but it's a good thing this is a single camera show so we don't have to deal with that.

Actually this is the time to be cast in a series, at least in a recurring role. Regulars are already working on their shows for the fall, but guest stars and recurring stars can come in at any time the script calls for them.

Do we know if MC has a holding contract with the CW? That could keep him from working anywhere else except a CW show.
