Episode Disussion: 6.18 The Real Paul Anka

I know in just a few hours we'll have a new episode, but I just wanted to read other people's opinions on last week's episode. Hope it's okay I started this thread. If not, just delete it.

No point in arguing too much over what happened since only a few hours till the next episode.

But thought I'd just say I loved seeing April this episode and how she related to Luke. Trying to get closer to him yet making sure he knew the distance he needed to keep before he came annoying. Reminded me of first season when the show focused more on the little things rather than the big crisises we've become accustomed to.

Warning...the following blurb mentions TONIGHT'S promo.

I had this conversation with Kasia on MSN and I thought it was fun to nitpick ASP's total lack of time-sequence on GG in the most recent episodes. Are we in February? March? April?

Quote:
~ Mickey_Jr says: Since you already know...I figured a few days ago why Luke wouldn't be at the wedding. The only explanation is if he was busy with April...that or being REALLY ill would be a reason why Lorelai had to choose Deadbeat as a substitute. If Luke had to choose between going to one of April's school functions or Lane's wedding, he'd go to April's school function. But it's odd considering that two weeks ago (6.17), when Luke first announced the trip he was going on with April, Zach hadn't even asked Mrs. Kim's permission for the marriage. So they planned it in less than two weeks?

Kasia says: well it looks like some people can plan a wedding in 2 weeks and others can't in 5!!!! months!

~ Mickey_Jr says:Um...getting family in from out of town in less than two weeks is kinda weird

Kasia says: wellll. Liz was able

~ Mickey_Jr says:
Hehe...right, Liz! Besides, what month is it in Gilmore-land anyway? In 6.16 was it March or April? Because 6.17 takes place a day after 6.16, and 6.18 is a week after 6.17, and 6.19 seems to be a week after 6.18...In Gilmore-time that is

Kasia says:
hahah exactly, with Luke and Rory leaving the same day and coming back the same day in season 5 and then rory goes back to Yale and LL have their first date so how long they waited after he was back a month ?

~ Mickey_Jr says: Weird. I conclude it was a Time-skip in 6.17. Rory's storyline of avoidinng Logan takes place right after the Bridesmaid's incident as it should (the Stars Hollow visit as well) but simultaneously, Lorelai's story (with the school trip) takes place in the middle of April, 5 weeks after Bridesmaids. Rory's storyline in 6.18 is in accordance with Lorelai's as it skips the 5 weeks.

Kasia says: I love the lack on ANY consequence in GG

When did Taylor become mayor?

When he was talking to Lorelai and her parents, he refered to himself as mayor of Stars Hollow. I guess I missed that election.

I was confused on the mayor issue...I thought he was townselectman.

I've also been really confused on this timeline. But they've had at least 3 weeks to plan the wedding, because Luke is going away for 10 days. *shrugs* I dunno.

I liked the episode.

- Rory/Jess was great ... but, I think I'd prefer her with Logan at this point. They have some issues to deal with ... but I'm rooting for them.

- Lorelai needs to confront Luke already. This whole post-ponement, complete and utter lack of a relationship with April ... they might as well just end there relationship. It's not going anywhere.

- I love that they re-mentioned the "Life and Death Brigade" ... I was glad the writer's didn't forget about that.

- I love how Lorelai spilled coffee on Lane's mother's dress. That was a perfect way to end the episode.

- Lorelai's dream was hilarious. That was one of the best beginnings on Gilmore Girls, ever!

I loved seeing Colin, Robert and Finn. They are always enjoyable.

My favourite part was Mrs Kim. The look on her face when she was talking to Lorelai about letting women ride horses was priceless.

Well, I'll start with the things that I liked:
  • Kirk ready to usurp Caesar's role in the diner when Caeser was freaking out and then totally taking over when Caeser went outside.
  • Luke calling Lorelai "his girl."
  • Lane freaking out about the wedding dress that her mother wants her to wear.
  • Jess paying Luke back even though he didn't have to.
  • Emily really made sense for once - but more on that in a second.

Okay, now the things I just didn't like at all:
  • The two second kiss between Luke and Lorelai before he went away. I know they've been a couple for a while, but aren't they going to miss each other even a little bit?
  • Lorelai being passive-aggressive with the bag that Anna bought Luke - Lorelai already had her chance to say that she didn't want Luke to accept the bag and didn't take it. Acting like a two-year-old that isn't getting her way really isn't going to help the situation.
  • Rory acting all passive-aggressive toward Logan - if you are still so pissed at him, why did you go back to him in the first place?! It's making me feel bad for Logan and I hate feeling bad for Logan.
  • Anything with Rory and Jess - I never really understood their relationship when they dated in high school and I just don't get him showing up every so often to remind her that her boyfriend is a jerk. Can't she come to that conclusion on her own?
  • Lorelai ruining Mrs. Kim's wedding dress on purpose - I know that Lane asked her to do that, but that seemed really uncalled for. If Lane doesn't want to wear that dress, she should take it up with her mother, not ask Lorelai to do something like that. And though I knew it was going happen when I saw Lorelai standing there with a mug in her hand, it was completely inappropriate.

And my two biggest problems with this episode that is just making me not want to watch the show anymore because I see the direction that it's going:
  1. Luke referring to Rory as "an old friend, the daughter of the woman he is seeing"
Oh no he didn't! This girl is going to be his daughter's stepsister if nothing else and that's the way they are introduced?! I know that Luke is socially awkward and even more so with his new daughter, but no freaking way is that how Rory is introduced to April! Any sympathy I had for Luke about this situation went out the window right then. Because it seems like not only is Lorelai being kept from April physically, but also in conversation and in their interactions. For all the time that April seems to spend at the diner with Luke, for him to refer to Lorelai as "the woman I'm seeing" is insulting and ridiculous! No matter how much he wants to be a part of this girl's life - we are talking LORELAI, the girl he has wanted to marry for years, and now he's not even talking about her. He had problems with Nicole at the beginning because he couldn't stop talking about Lorelai on their freakin' first date and now with his daughter, he's not even mentioning her name?! You have got to be kidding me! Which leads to...
  2. Emily's rant about Luke's daughter and Lorelai's place in her life - because she was right. on.
Who knew that Emily Gilmore would be the voice of reason in this little charade?! I really hate the Lorelai is trying to play off Luke's decision to keep April from Lorelai as their mutual decision, even if she is talking to her mother. It seems like Lorelai is now lying to herself as well as everyone else around her when it comes to April. And like someone else brought up, I'm surprised that Anna hasn't asked to meet Lorelai since this woman will supposedly become the stepmother of her daughter, if only on the weekends or whatever the arrangement turns out to be. And I'm guessing the reason for that is that Luke isn't talking about Lorelai, which again is troubling.
I just wish Lorelai would find her backbone again and start talking to Luke. Because I'm not sure how much more of this dysfunction I can handle.

I totally agree, specially because Lorelai usually isn't like that, she sticks up for herself and confronts people directly.
