I think Rory became self aware just by going to Chilton itself. She never paid attention to the kids at Stars Hollow High. She only noticed Dean on her last day. And she only had one friend in school, that was Lane. But at Chilton is was a new world. They were kids who aspired to be the best, something Rory had come naturally to her when it came down to academics. Then it became clear that she would have to work a lot harder than she was prepared for. And that just killed her spirits. The first few months were like a train wreck for her life. She was studying anytime she wasn't in class. And when she was in class, it was always this competition with Paris. Then she got to know the Bopsie Twins (Louise and Marilyn). And they were all about clothes, makeup and boys. And although Rory loved her studies, loved to be the best academically, I think deep down she wanted to wear the makeup and be a trend setter. She also wanted what Marilyn and Louise knew by heart. And when Tristan took interest in her, she stayed away from them. But didn't really deny that if they had started going out (taking Dean out of the picture), then she would become one of those girls. One of the girls who cares about how she looks and what she wears (or how she would wear that ever-so-plain Chilton uniform). It was all changing for her. The Chilton kids were different, therefore, Rory was different. Stars Hollow wasn't her place anymore. She started to feel at home with Louise and Marilyn and learned how to tame Paris. So Rory changed and didn't realize it. It was only until Dean so blantantly pointed it out to her that she had changed, she wasn't just Rory Gilmore...she was RORY GILMORE who had a reputation. She was just different.

And all the while everyone else noticed it, she never did. I think Lorelei noticed it, but let Rory grow into who she needed to be without telling her she was changing.

I just didn't want Rory to change. Her individuality is what made her unique, the only Rory Gilmore. But eventually she became everyone else.

If I rambled, sorry, I just feel like Rory changed once Chilton wasn't such a challenge for her. She always needs a challenge and she lost it
