Lorelei and Rory both had their own language that outside of Stars Hollow did not make sense, and didn't make much sense to Luke at some points either. But it was their old movie inspired language. that was their connection.

Agreed. And I liked that. Very unique.

I think somewhere Emily Gilmore is still pondering Lorelei's little thoughts from Friday Night Dinner

I also loved how the Pilot introduced a lot of places/persons. Especially the E/R/L dynamic. But also R/L, Michel, Sookie, Mrs Kim, Miss Patty (was Babette in the pilot?)

I don't remember her until later, like maybe late season 1 or even Season 2

I checked IMDB.com and it has her first episode as "The Lorelei's First Day at Chilton"

Wasn't she like going through SH with her cat in a wagon in an early season? Maybe without even speaking.

I don't really remember her until later, so I think she had a very limited role. I don't think they actually showed her living next to Lorelei until Season 2

Hee. Babette and Morey had the cat stroller in Cinnamon's wake. According to IMDB, that's episode #5. So at least she had a big sub-plot early on.

I Babette!

Babette was established as Lorelai's neighbor early on, if I'm not mistaken. In Cinnamon's wake Lorelai runs next door to her house -from Babette's- when she sees Max on her front porch.

edited: according to IMDB is Morey not Maury.

I'm pretty sure she was in ep 2 when Lorelai has all the stress with Emily and comes home, Babette is there to tell her about the DSL or so.

This was one of the best Pilot the characters Rory, Dean and Lane looked authentic for their ages. I loved the R/D interaction its why I'll always have a soft spot for them Rory's reaction when getting the skirt "I'm going to be in a Britney Spears video" is a classic. I liked Lorelai scenes with her parents you can tell alot of tension and Lor looking at the portrait when she made her decision was a classic touch she shows that she felt some type of loyalty to them.

I never thought of loyalty. More like she's sighing inwardly and cringes remembering the past.

I think Lorelei cringes when she remembers her past. She was so closed in, never really had any fun. And I agree, Lorelei would have picked up and moved out the day of graduation if she had not gotten pregnant. I mean Emily screaming that she put her in the best schools, gave her everything. But in that really non-heartwarming speech, Emily did not once mention what she did for her that did not include money. No slumber parties, no time for just them. Emily was all about giving the best to Lorelei but never making sure Lorelei was okay with any of it. She treated Lorelei like a porcelain doll...giving her the best education, the best dresses for all the gowns. And in return Emily thought Lorelei would respect her...but in the end Lorelei ended up resenting her.

I think it was a combination. I do think Lor did have some good times in Hartford I mean she talks about parties in the pool house in Pippi Virgin and Richard has a fond memory of her taking her Dad's Yale diploma and say I'm going to Yale. I do think if she hadn't gotten pregnant she would have taken her parents resources and went to college after all why did she encourage Rory to go Harvard

The problem, I think, was the pressure to be perfect. Lorelai is an excellent student, leader and person. But to be so young and already feel like your life has been lived, that you have no options and no say in your own future. She wanted to be educated and productive, but it was too much too soon for her to have Emily like a drill sargeant day in and day out.

Lorelai wanted some control, and she found it first by becoming rebellious, and later on by moving out with Rory.

One time Lorelai tells Rory that the only time her parents looked small to her was when she told them she was pregnant. To me that statement sheds light on what Loreali wanted, a little control, and her body was about the only thing, at the time, that Emily had no hopes of controlling.

Rory gave Lorelai the power over her own body and her own life, and in the Pilot we see that it was Rory who brought Lorelai back to her parents lives once again full time. It's kind of beautiful, I think.

Maybe without Rory Lorelai would have left after graduation and never looked back until a tragedy or some thing of the sort.

I don't know... Lorelai HATED that she owed her parents anything during the series - her basic nature was extremely independent, so I could definitely imagine her still going off on her own and figuring out what she wanted to do with her life from there even if she hadn't gotten pregnant. Lorelai herself said she felt trapped as a child, and even though there were a handful of good memories I still got the impression she wanted out of it. I think when it came to Rory, she was very protective and wanted the best for her daughter which is why she encouraged her to go to the best schools and did what she had to do to get her there.
