Jess and Breaking the Bad Boy Character Development Trope

My favourite thing about Jess’ character development has to be how it breaks the ‘love of a good woman’ redemption trope. So many show rely on the idea that if the bad boy falls in love with the good girl then she will change him and make him a better person.

But we don’t get that with Jess. He is still fundamentally an emotional mess during his relationship with Rory. His communication skills don’t get better, his self-esteem is still non-existent, he still flunks out of school and he spirals down into his lowest point during the whole series, which causes their break up. And that’s because the show recognises that Jess’ issues cannot be ‘cured’ by Rory.

Instead, Jess has to go away and sort himself out. He’s still not on that path for most of Season 4. He’s still struggling to communicate, still running away from his emotions and problems, and still lashing out at those around him. His defence mechanisms remain on their highest settings. And again, the show doesn’t go the easy route, in having him realise how much he loves Rory as the catalyst for change of him.

Instead, it’s his relationship with Luke that is the turning point for him. It’s Luke who gives him the self-help book that allows Jess to learn how to deal with his emotions in a more productive and healthy way; to learn not to compartmentalise everything and instead come to terms with his thoughts and feelings instead. It’s Luke who gives Jess the validation that he desperately needs and lets him know that he’ll always be there for him. The first time that someone actually gives him that unconditional support and love, which Luke recognises that Jess needs so badly at this moment in time.

In fact, when Jess, actually optimistic for once that he’s been able to process his emotions in the proper manner, goes to see Rory, she shuts him down and reinforces that he still has a long way to go before he’s in a healthy state of mind.

Then, when we meet Jess again in Season 6, he’s moved passed his depression and has become the person who always had so much potential if only he could just find some self-belief and healthier ways to deal with his problems. He has built a life for himself away from any family but also away from any of his demons, and he’s done this on his own. As the revival shows us, he has continued that growth into the mature and healthy person we see who is able to support and give advice to those around him.

Jess ends the series as one of the more stable and mature characters in the series and I always love that he manages this feat by himself. It’s not tied to a frankly unhealthy and co-dependent trope of changing to get the girl. Instead, he recognises how he has sabotaged his own life and turns himself around. This is the kind of character development I live for.
gonna post the whole thing here cause it's so good
