Well,Kirsty,here's what James Marsters who has done some of the hottest scenes I've ever seen filmed (on Buffy the Vampire Slayer) says about it:

love scenes are like stunts...which is to say if you give over to the emotion of the scene when you're doing stunts...you are going to hurt someone...if you give over to the emotion in a love scene,you're going to look stupid. There is nothing sillier than watching 2 people have sex. There is absolutely nothing dorkier. You know what I mean? And so it becomes...when you do a love scene it becomes,oh,man...to make the act of sex look glamorous is a big thing to do...a lot of work. There is almost nothing less romantic than doing a "love scene".

I reckon doing on screen sex scenes is a big deal in terms of personal relatioships.
