I really loved how the show balanced her strength and gentleness. I really hate when people think that strong female character has to mean unsympathetic and closed off. Katara was able to be both!

Agreed! I think many characters in shows can become one dimensional. Like the “tough character” or the “sensitive character.” It’s always wonderful to see characters that are more complex than that because people are more complex than that.
