I'm gonna rewatch this episode in a few days, I've been having a little ER oldies marathon and tonight I'll start s3.
I've always loved episodes set during night shifts (also "A shift in the night", s2, when Mark is the only doctor and there are tons of patients); this one is made even better by Doug/Carol moments and especially by Weaver getting knocked up by the clock...

I'm Not Dead

Night Shift is one of my favourite ER episodes ever. The Doug/Carol stuff is some of the best we ever got.

Carol: Doug, it was this one.
Doug: Oh yeah. A lot of stolen moments in there...
Carol: Yes, there were...
Doug: So, should we?
Carol: What?!
Doug: Open the door?
Carol: Oh, right.



The Kerry/Jeanie/Wendy storyline was a really funny one and a nice change for Jeanie from her HIV storyline.

The clock on Kerry's head kills me. I don't think she was terribly well-liked in the fandom at this point, so I think a lot of people were kind of rooting for Carol.

Seriously. They were not trying to win any popularity contests with her, that's for sure.

I loved Night Shift. There was a lot of great little storylines going on. There was some great comedic stuff, especially considering how that episode ended. I'm glad it wasn't a fast-paced episode because the contrast between the rest of the episode and Benton and Carter working so frantically on Gant at the end, the tragedy of Gant's death was just amplified that much more. I never particularly cared for Gant as a character, but his death gave his character meaning in a way. Especially because of the unsure nature of it, did he fall? Or did he jump?

You and me both. A Shift In The Night is probably one of my very most favorite ER eps. I just love love the ending when they're treating patients in the waiting area and just really helping people.

I think Gant's death really underscored Benton's character flaws, too. His teaching style was rather harsh and not encouraging in the way some others were. Like Mark, or Susan, or even Abby Keaton. Gant felt like nothing he was doing was good enough, when in the end, we found out later Benton was just hard on him because he wanted him to be good. And Carter had guilt over the whole thing, too, because he didn't feel like he supported him enough in dealing with Benton. I think the whole thing was actually really well done. Gant wasn't a major character, but they handled the storyline very well and actually made us remember him. Me, anyway.

That's exactly what I love. That's how medicine is supposed to be.

Ash- Gant's death wa sa really upsetting moment, and the aftermath was even worse. I didn't appreciate Benton's reaction, he was too cold, too distant. He didn't even went to the commemoration...

Btw, do you guys watch House? In one of the first episodes of the series Foreman (played by Omar Epps) says he's been in medicine for 8 years, which is exactly how long Gant would have been in 2004... Coincidence?
