Vintage Episode Discussion: 1.10 "Blizzard" {December 8, 1994}

With the show over, Ash and I have decided to resume the vintage episode discussions. In addition to episode discussions, we'll also be working in Character Spotlight threads every other week or every couple weeks(instead of an ep discussion) for some of the memorable, yet less discussed characters. The Vintage Ep Discussions and Character Spotlights will stay topped for about a week and then detopped as the new threads are made.

NBC Summary:

Quote:
SNOW TIME TO WASTE -- When a blizzard brings Chicago to a stand still, the ER staff finds creative ways to pass the time. Just when they are reaching new levels of boredom, a fifteen-car pileup on the expressway wreaks havoc in the ER. With mass casualties, the Chicago Sheriff's department must escort in additional doctors to assist.
Full Summary @ ERHQ

A Couple Clips:

Mark and Susan plaster Carter's leg while he's sleeping

A bunch of the staff throwing snowballs and goofing off

Linda tells Carol how much her ring is worth, and the big car accident

Discuss. Memories of watching it, impressions, reactions, scene(s) you remember most, pretty much anything you want that pertains to the episode

Thanks for opening this. You couldn't have picked a better episode to start with.

Blizzard has always been one of the greatest ER episodes ever produced. It redefined "frenetic pace", but at the same time, it found moments to slow everything down and give the audience a chance to breathe (like when Haleh sang a child to sleep in the middle of the ER chaos, or when the nun prayed over the dead man in the trauma room).

The first time I remember seeing Blizzard was on the Season 1 VHS (yes - VHS!) and at first, I thought, "Oh cool, it's a snow-day so it will be a quiet episode and I can drift in and out of the episode without missing anything".

I could not have been more wrong! I was fascinated by how the episode played out, but at the same time, I was kinda glad to see it end because I felt so exhausted.

Of course, the Doug/Carol scenes also stand out for me. I loved it when Doug walked into the ER with Linda, and Carol announced that she was engaged. Doug looked like he had been punched right in the gut! I thought Carol deserved the chance to gloat, because here Doug was bringing his girlfriend into their place of work, but Carol basically said a big "Suck it!" to him when she announced her engagement. Doug sulked off and then the whole staff gave Carol a look like, "You two are soooooooooo not over each other".

Also, any episode with Linda Farrell is a classic in my mind. She was so awesome.

I nearly forgot about the scene where Mark and Susan put a cast on Carter's leg. Noah a lot of great physical comedy to do in the first season, but the cast takes the cake. And then the biker guy starts hacking it off with a saw later on!!

Great idea to open an episode discussion thread! Thanks for that!!!

Blizzard was a great episode! It was so funny in the beginning...I missed such scenes in the further seasons! God, Mark and Susan putting a cast on Cater's leg how he stormed out of the room when they called him and he fell down poor Carter!

And everything was so quiet...except of the sitting football game they did, playing in the snow, Malik rapping and Wendy skating around...and suddenly: BANG! The accident really was exploding the ER then!!!

Aw...the Carol/Doug scene How poor Doug looked when Carol told him that she was going to marry Tag...I wanted to hug him then and tell him that everything will be fine

But yeah, Linda was a great charackter! I liked her

It was an awesome episode, and definitely one of the show's greatest. I love the way they show them getting ready to receive the wounded and everything is so slow. Then they arrive and things just get crazy. It's such a contrast to later seasons. And I love that Carol's answer to Doug bringing new flame into the ER was to announce her engagement.

And Mark and Susan... God, that scene with them casting Carter's leg was so cute. The chemistry was awesome.

This is one of my favorite ER episodes!

I loved the cast messing around when they had no patients. Mark & Susan plastering Carter's leg is definitely my favorite scene...and then when everyone calls Carter out and he can't walk

This episode was my favorite of season one. I love Mark and Susan plastering Carter's leg, they're all so cute!
And that Doug/Carol kiss is too sweet.
I' watching season 2 right now, so I'm glad you opened this "vintage" thread so that we have something to talk about, now that there won't be new episodes anymore.

I hadn't really thought about it but you're right. There's so much about this episode that had it been set five, seven or even ten seasons later would have been handled completely different. Even the leg plastering scene. There was still a good amount of comic relief as the show went on, but I think a fair bit of the straight up slap stick got lost along the way. And how classic is the leg plastering? It may can only be topped by the guy with the arrow sticking out of his head, or Jerry blowing up the Ambulance Bay

They had slapstick in later seasons but it just wasn't... funny. Morris and the cheese, Dubenko getting bit by the camel... Definitely can't compare to the vintage stuff.

The ER PTB are evil - Lucien being bitten wasn't funny at all But at least the camel had fewer fleas than Wexler

Sorry... I'll shut up now... I just couldn't help myself

I love this episode - Mark and Susan are hilarious when they're plastering Carter's leg. I love the bit when he wakes up, and asks what's going on, and Mark quickly says "Nothing! Nothing, we're just doing inventory", and Susan jumps in with "gurney number... "(whatever it is!) Brilliant.

Yup. They were such great partners in crime.
