So the S.14 finale was on last night, in prep for next week's S.15 premiere. I found myself watching with new appreciation for a certain character (you know, the whole 'ER loses one of its own' promo). I knew the whole Brenner/Neela thing was coming and I still found it cringe-worthy. When this first aired, so many of us were mad, saying it's a copy of the Neela/Gates M&M thing and why have the writers lost their minds as well as their creativity. But it kinda dawned on me last night that they purposely made the Neela/Brenner thing similar to Neela/Gates. Why? To show this never-ending cycle Neela's in, where she makes the same mistakes over and over. I feel now like it was less of an attempt to test a Neela/Brenner pairing on the fans, and more of a vehicle to push her (and eventually Reela's) storyline along. In any case, they filmed the premiere (and a couple of epis, too, right?) last season, so the writers knew then where Neela/Brenner were headed. Anyway, that's how I feel -- it's kinda like the Neela/Ray "socks" scenes from S.13 and 14 - they're mimicking certain scenes on purpose. What do you guys thinK?

I think it was reverse, they did the Neela/Simon crap to piss us off...AND remember in all likelihood, at the time that show was written, they didn't know Ray was coming back yet so they wanted to have something for Neela to do in case he couldn't come back. Freaking ET!

Anyway, I kinda agree with Sandal when she says "To show this never-ending cycle Neela's in, where she makes the same mistakes over and over". I think it was essentially used to express how low and desperate Neela has fallen. She is emotionally damaged and really has no place to turn. She's trying to find peace of mind and stability but still doesn't grasp the steps she needs to take to become whole again. So she just jumps into any situation, no matter how irrational, in order to find comfort. That's my 2 cents.

Yeah, I'm not sure what ET means either?

I know what you're saying, Smasher, except that if they didn't know whether Shane would be back or not, why would they purposely want to risk pissing us off even more? If they really wanted her to move on, they would have resolved the Ray issue so that the Roomie fans would accept her with someone else. I dunno, I can see where it could be a backup plan, but I think it was just to create something steamy as a cliffhanger but with no real future.

Well, I guess it's all water under the bridge, as they say, since we know Ray's coming back. It struck me last night that the Simon/Neela thing was less diabolical than I first thought

, so I took it as a small consolation that TPTB were't out to burn us.

And G, interesting you used the phrase "she jumps into any situation" -- that's figuratively and literally true in Neela's case, huh?! With both Gates and Brenner, she practically lunges at them in this rushed jumble of misguided emotion. But with Ray, it was slow and gentle and deep-rooted... With Gates and Brenner, it was clearly lust. With Ray, it was so much more beyond the physical (dare i say the other "L" word?!). Oct. 31 can't get here soon enough!

ET is the name of David Lyons' character on Sea Patrol, a series he is on in Australia.

ITA, in regards to Neela. She even jumped into marriage with Michael when she barely knew him. They had never went out on a date and shared their first kiss when he left to go to Iraq. Then a year later, they had slept together after writing each other and then he was gone the next day. Then after being back together only a week, she marries him and he goes back to Iraq. She does have a bad habit of jumping into things without really thinking.

Her relationship with Ray is the only time she didn't jump into it without thinking about the consequences.

Agreed on Neela. And I think you may be right about the Neela and Brenner thing as well, Sandalwood. Though, it could've been a little of both. Thinking at the time may have been something along the lines of 'if Shane comes back, it works to showcase how misguided and lost Neela is. If he doesn't, it works to show she's moving on.' A scene that could work either way, depending on what happened with the negotiations to bring Shane back. Fortunately for us, they got him, so it's probably the former they're going for.

I should correct myself because it wasn't really lust with either men. It was really her overwhelming need to fill the void in her life and heart with something (anything) -- especially in the case of Simon, since that encounter came completely out of nowhere

. On any other day, I don't think a sexual attraction alone would have drawn her to either of these men. Like Neela herself said once, she's trying to create bridges from one part of her life into another (and not having much success, sadly). Somebody tell her she can stay on this side of the shore coz Ray's comin'!!
