This thread is devoted to the pairing of Neela Rasgotra and Ray Barnett. Neela is a smart, by-the-book girl, and Ray is a doctor, in a rock-band boy's body. Both met in season 11 and the hints and sparks have beenflying since. From the first casual flirt, to the snowballs thrown, to the invitation to become roommates, these two are meant to be. And this is just the beginning of their story..

I love the title you chose for the thread. I just hope we get some news soon. I keep hearing that the strike will be over soon but I'm not going to believe it until it actually happens.

Why is a coma so "stupid"? It's entirely within the realm of possibility. And judging from the posts on this board and others, plus the fanfics on the subject, I'm sure tons of fans would have taken something like that over the trauma of seeing their favorite character literally cut off at the knees. The greater point I was making was about ER's constant need for shock value.

In fact, rather than what we got, it's entirely plausible for Ray to have left County and Chicago of his own accord -- take time off, clear his head, not wanting to deal with Neela and Gates. Yes, I know he's in the middle of his residency, but sometimes people make rash decisions in the heat of the moment. And I did note that the amputation storyline could be heart-wrenching and uplifting. But if Shane does not return, then our last memory is of a bitter, broken Ray with two bandaged stumps being wheeled out, helpless and dependent upon a woman (his mother) with whom he seems to have a complicated relationship.

To Ash and Galaxy: You two make very compelling arguments as to why this amputation storyline can be a great one for the roomie relationship. It can really heighten the drama and intensity between these two characters that we've never seen before. It may also give Neela the opportunity to really express how she feels and really fight for what she wants for a change instead of keeping her feelings on the inside. So from that standpoint, the amputation arc seems to be appealing.

However, I think Sandal's point of view is coming from a place of general frustration that all roomie fans feel. So I can also relate to her argument as well. As a loyal roomie fan and a major shipper of this couple, I wish that TPTB had gone a less tragic route. Perhaps, another storyline could have worked and been equally effective. I think that the underlying problem is that TPTB never really gave Ray anything to do(especially in season 13) other than pine over Neela. Then the next thing you know, they just drop this bomb on us that Ray's legs has been amputated. It just seemed kinda cheap to me and just another typical "shock value" moment ala TPTB.

So, I guess what I'm saying is, I agree with all three of you.

Thanks for the new thread and please we need to be optimistic about Ray's return because I'm sure Shane is for a closure on Ray and Neela's issues. We need our proper ending for our Roomie and that's it.

He did say he'd started recording again, but he didn't choose music over medicine. To have him do so would have gone back on all the progress and growth he'd made as a character. The band kicking him out was given as an example that he'd already been more serious about the medicine. His focus on the doctor thing was why they kicked him out. And he was genuinely upset that Weaver took it as him 'quitting' in "If Not Now", even before the band kicked him out and he had nothing to fall back on.

And the coma plot may be within the realm of possibility, but it has been done to death on every major soap opera. ER has enough soapy elements without adding prolonged coma plots to the mix. He could not be kept at County more than a few weeks before he'd be shipped off to a facility of some sort until he woke up. And if he didn't return, we'd be left to wonder whether he ever woke up or his mother just decided to pull the plug after 20 years. At least with what we got, we know that he's planning to be fitted with prosthetics, so presumably it will happen, and he will be able to live a pretty full life, including having a relationship with Neela if that's what the two of them decide. The last we see of him if he doesn't return is the bitter man that left in THO. But the last we hear of him if he doesn't return is that he doesn't blame Neela for what happened, which paves the way for them to work things out and have the kind of ending we want for them. I wasn't thrilled with the way they decided to do it when I found out what happened to Ray (and I knew well before the spoilers hit the net) - I'm still not thrilled with it - but I have grown to like the fact that doing it this way really drives home the truth of the relationship. Ray's missing part of his legs, and Neela has her own physical scars, but none of that matters to the other. She still finds him desirable and vice versa, and they're not any less of a man or a woman to each other; it's more than the physical. It always has been. I think that they've stayed the truest to the ship with that notion.

Good points ash about the offscreen contact. I'll try to bear that in mind as a watch a repeat of the season 13 final tomorrow night. Boo hoo. It's to whet the appetite for the s14. What cracked me up from a reela fan's point of view was the comment in the tv guide. " Luka postpones his honeymoon " Like that is the most salient thing that happnes in the episode!! Did they even watch it?! Am I roomie obsessed?

True, a coma is soapy but it would have kept Ray intact. Anyway, it was just an off-the-cuff example of other ways to explain his absence. The ER writers could have come up with another edgier, shock-inducing alternative if they wanted to. A temporary paralysis of some sort would have kept him from working at County (until his miraculous recovery

) but we'd still know that he was talking to Neela, didn't blame her, etc.

It's not so much about the storyline aspect as it is this feeling that stirs up inside me from time to time that TPTB cut off his legs in SPITE. Sounds irrational, I know, but can't help it.

I've always agreed that the amputation storyline holds great potential for our Roomies and for Shane and Mindi as actors -- but it's only compelling if they actually bring him back and complete it. If they don't and never really intended to, then that whole THO scenario was just mean (shock for shock's sake).

Wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment about scars and it being about more than just the physical for them.

Speaking of soapy, what if Ray had woken up from the accident with amnesia?! If he was still around this season, that would have been both tragic and funny! He doesn't remember Neela, doesn't remember all the complicated history. So then Neela offers to stay at his place to help him as he gets re-oriented. In the process, he falls for her (all over again) but since there's no baggage holding him back, we see an aggressive, get-the-girl kinda Ray! Oh, I'd totally eat that up! (Or flip it: we see Neela struggling with her growing feelings for Ray, who is totally oblivious to her. So Neela has to do the pursuing for a while...)

Shane said in the TV Guide interview that they wanted drama, but didn't want to kill off Ray. Which tells me that they wanted to keep the option of bringing him back open. And really, if they didn't plan to, I don't think we would've gotten the mentions of him that we have. The strike has thrown a monkey wrench into things, unfortunately, so who knows what will happen.

And amnesia? No thank you. If I wanted soapy, I'd watch Grey's - and I don't. Most of the complaints I've seen from ER fans have been that the show has turned into General Hospital (a US soap opera), and that ER is trying to be Grey's Anatomy and that's not what fans of the show want; it's why they're turning it off. I don't think it should be only focused on patients, but I think we need good solid dramatic writing, not melodramatic soapy stuff.

I completely agree with Ash - ER has slowly morphed itself into a more rubbish version of Grey's anatomy - that show works with that style because of the whole focus and characters they have - and loathe it or like it, it is well written most of the time - ALL the characters get enough air time, unlike ER...

That said, ER, when the writers get it right, rises well above Grey's in terms of good quality medical drama - now all they need to do is get Shane back!
